International Film & Society Case Essay
France Belle de Jour (1968)
Dir: Luis Buñuel
Since its inception, film has been a medium of communication. From its early beginnings to its current state, it serves as a platform for communicating both personal and world issues, from the everyday to global topics. Looking back at films from a certain era allows us to experience the world as it was seen then, preserving ideas, culture, and themes prevalent to the times.
World cinema offers a rich language of cultural expression that allows us a glimpse into parts of the world that many of us would not get a chance to see otherwise.
This paper requires critical analysis to be done on one of the films mentioned above. The paper should be written with historical and cultural perspectives at the forefront. It should cover two main topics:
How is this film influenced by society, culture and the times in which it was made?
and
How can this film influence society, culture, and the times in which it is watched?
To be more specific: discuss how films express meanings and themes prominent in society and how viewers understand the meanings proposed by the films. How much influence do you believe society had on the film you’ve chosen. How do you believe audiences reacted to these messages and themes? Do you believe audiences reacted how the filmmakers hoped they would? Discuss the importance of the filmmaker communicating these ideas to a local and global audience. Consider how, if in any way, this film influenced history and society.
Just as importantly, analyze the use of cinematic tools in the film. How do you believe elements such as cinematography, sound, acting, story, design, and film structure are used to communicate ideas and themes by the filmmakers. How does the use of elements shape the film, and how do you believe audiences reacted to the messages communicated by these cinematic elements?
Your final paper should be between 2-4 pages, not counting title page and abstract, and should include answers to the discussion questions listed above. Utilize your knowledge of communication in film and what you have learned in the course so far to better articulate or convey your assessment of the chosen film.
