Overview:
RMI 4597 is a writing-intensive course. You are required to write a clear, concise, and grammatically correct research paper written in a professional, persuasive and compelling style, the type of paper you would use in a business setting to convince colleagues or customers. Length should be limited to a maximum of Ten (10) pages, double spaced, Times New Roman or Arial 11 font-size with one-inch margins.
Learning goals for this assignment:
- Demonstrate understanding of a specific risk management issue/strategy of interest related to the course subject matter;
- Apply this information to analyze, evaluate, and create a Risk Management solution for the problem or issue you are addressing demonstrating why it is the appropriate solution;
- Write a finished research paper proving your position.
Process and Grade
This project is an individual effort. We will discuss deadlines in class. The following steps must be completed to receive a grade for this project:
- Select a Risk Management Question and research, read, and study. Draft an outline, and submit for feedback;
- Write your first draft, and submit for critique and feedback per the Evaluation Criteria;
- Revise and submit a second draft for peer-review by a classmate; and,
- Write a third and final draft and submit for grading.
Choose a Question
Start the process by choosing a question from the list provided below and research and study the issues. Use your research to draft and support a clear and concise solution. Define the issues you will discuss and argue both sides of the question. Anticipate how your selected topic/issues will evolve as you prepare your research paper. Will you be able to discuss your subject within the confines of the course material? Will you be able to develop your ideas logically? Will you be able to refute opposing views convincingly? I will assess the papers based on depth of knowledge and quality of research you demonstrate, and your ability to organize your thoughts in a logical sequence, all with a clear and concise writing style.

Evaluation Criteria – Organization
- Ideas are expressed and developed with good structure and in a logical order and sequence;
- There is one subject per paragraph, and paragraphs don’t run on;
- Sentences and paragraphs are clear and coherent, with transitions that explain their connections;
- Follow APA documentation for proper footnotes and endnotes;
- Include a bibliography in addition to references and endnotes.

Select One of the Four Risk Management Questions.
For purposes of this assignment, please select one of the four case questions. Assume that you are the Chief Risk Officer addressing a Risk Management issue for the Chief Executive and Financial Officers. The paper (or think about it as a memo) must be a maximum of Ten (10) pages. The page count does not include the abstract, graphics, or appendices.
You must follow an iterative writing process. You will be required to submit an outline for your paper, and a first draft for review, feedback, and a grade. The outline must include a solution, which is a statement or theory that is put forward as a solution or premise to be selected or proved. Clearly state your solution. In this case, you will be making a Risk Management recommendation and defending it, making the case why your program recommendation should be adopted by an organization. The second draft will be peer-reviewed. The final draft will receive a final grade. The final draft must include an abstract, which is a summary or your paper. The abstract should be a maximum of 350 words.
This assignment requires that you research how comparable organizations manage risk, specific risk management techniques to address the question raised, including issues or challenges associated with the solution, and any relevant financial and regulatory matters. You must cite any sources, facts, or data following APA guidelines.
- Alpha Borealis, Inc., is an Australian-based wallaby food manufacturer that has been expanding in both product line and distribution in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Alpha is building manufacturing facilities in all its global locations. Significant exposures include property, business interruption (indirect and contingent); products liability, products recall; and manufacturing work-related injuries. The CEO and CFO want a memo proposing a risk financing program that would address Alpha’s growth and significant exposures. Please explain all assumptions made.
