Increasing Compliance Attitudes, Conformity and Obedience
Choose and complete ONE of the following two options for this assignment.
Option 1: Increasing compliance
For this assignment, you are going to use what you have learned about attitudes and conformity and obedience to suggest ways to gets others to comply with a request. Follow the Written Assignment Guidelines in this and all other assignments in this course.
One area of social psychology involves social influence. There are many times in your life where you will have to try to persuade someone to do a behavior e.g. buy something you are selling, stop smoking, unload the dishwasher on a regular basis, vote for a particular candidate, exercise more, etc . For this assignment pick one behavior you want people to do.
Review the information in chapter 14 on attitudes (p. 556-559) and social influence (p. 560-566).
Research suggests that there are two ways to persuade people: the central route and the peripheral route. Explain these two routes to persuasion. Then explain how you would get a person you are trying to persuase to follow the desired behavior in each of these routes.
Then using your knowledge of persuasion and social influence suggest one additional way social psychological concepts can be applied to increase compliance in this case. Define the concept and explain how you would use it to get the person to change his or her behavior.

Option 2: Attributions and a just-world
For this assignment, you are going to look at attributions and how the just world phenomenon may impact how you interact with patients as a nurse. Follow theWritten Assignment Guidelines in this and all other assignments in this course.
We explain other people’s behavior almost automatically. Psychologists call this attribution. Explain the two types of attributions that we can make including an explanation of the difference between dispositional and situational attributions and a definition of the fundamental attribution error.
Then, suppose a person you are meeting for lunch in late. Explain at least one dispositional attribution you could make and also at least one situational attribution you could make in this case. Discuss how these different attributions might lead you to think differently about this person and impact how you treat them.
The just world phenomenon also can impact how we see others who are suffering. Pretend the friend finally shows up for lunch and tells you their house was robbed. Explain the belief in the just world and then explain how it might impact the way that you treat this person.
