INCIDENT 2: Why Not Me? I’m Qualified!
Bobby Bret thought he was on his way up when he started as a junior accountant at Crystal Productions five years ago. He had recently graduated with a B+B+ average from college, where he had been an official in several student organizations and was well loved by his peers and instructors. Bobby has demonstrated a natural ability to work well with others as well as get things done. “I think you will do well here, Bobby,” Roger Friedman, the controller at Crystal, had told him when he was hired. You’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback. You’re the type of guy who can expect to climb the corporate ladder quickly.”
Bobby thought he had done a terrific job at Crystal and that everyone liked him. Furthermore, his performance evaluations had been great. He was, however, still a junior accountant after five years. He applied for two senior accounting posts that had become available, but they were both filled by outsiders. Bobby had not applied for the accounting supervisor position when it became available two years earlier. He was taken aback when his new boss turned out to be a hotshot State University graduate with barely three years of experience working for a huge accounting company. Bobby had hoped that Ron Greene, a senior accountant whom he admired, would be chosen for the position.
Bobby thought it was time to do something for the fifth anniversary of his work at Crystal. He scheduled a meeting with the controller. Bobby told Mr. Friedman that he had worked hard for a promotion and expressed his dissatisfaction with having been in the same job for so long. “Well, you don’t think you were all that much better qualified than the folks we hired, do you?” Mr. Friedman asked. “No,” Bobby replied, “but I believe I could have handled the position of senior accountant.” Of course, the folks you hired are also doing a fantastic job.” “We simply look at the qualifications of all the candidates for each job and, after considering everything, try to make a sensible decision,” the controller said.
