importance of self-reflection in leadership development.
Task
Develop an understanding of your leadership style and of the importance of self-reflection in leadership development.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate advanced understanding of leadership theories, concepts and practice, including both traditional and contemporary forms of leadership (LO#1).
Notes
Your first assessment task is designed to give you a starting point from which to reflect on your raw leadership style and perspectives on leadership, as they are now, as you commence your MBA journey. This will start you on the, oftentimes difficult, path of critically reflecting on your personal leadership style and behaviours – an important aspect of leadership development, even for the most seasoned of leaders.
Procedures
There are two parts to this assessment:
- After engaging with the content in Week 1, you will have completed the following self-assessment questionnaires from the textbook in which you will examine and evaluate your own leadership traits, skills, and behaviours:
- Leadership Traits Questionnaire (chapter 2, p.37)
- Leadership Skills Inventory (chapter 3, p.67)
- Leadership Behaviour Questionnaire (chapter 4, p.89)
- Reflect on the results from each of the three leadership questionnaires that you had completed as detailed in step 1, and compose a 750-word response considering what you have learned about yourself and your perspectives on leadership. Use the following questions as a guide to help you draft your response. Do not use these questions as headings in your response as is to be written in an essay format.
- What have I learned about myself as a leader?
- What are the practical implications of these results on my leadership development?
- Also consider, what specific development goals and concrete action plans would improve my leadership capabilities in the future and build this response into Assessment 3.
- Please keep in mind that most academic writing is to be in third person, and while Assessment 1 is a reflective piece, it is strongly encouraged for you to have a go at writing it in third person as it will help you when completing Assessment 2 and 3. Third-person makes your writing more objective and less personal. For academic and professional writing, this sense of objectivity allows the writer to seem less biased and, therefore, more credible.
- After drafting your response, check it against the marking criteria for this task (see Assessment 1 rubrics). Make sure it is free of errors and submit it for marking by the due date.
Requirements
- The required word length for this assessment is 750 words (plus or minus 10%).
- Acknowledge the sources of facts appropriately. Use a minimum of one (1) reference in addition to the textbook. Adopt the author-date style of referencing – see the AIB Style Guide.
- All references must be from credible sources such as recent academic articles, books, industry-related journals, magazines and company documents.
- Your grade will be adversely affected if your response does not acknowledge the sources of information you have used (see Assessment Policy available on AIB website).
Utilise the suggested structure outlined in this ‘reflection template‘ as described below:
Note: Table of Contents and Executive Summary are NOT required for Assessment 1.
- Cover Page
- No Table of Contents
- No Executive Summary
- Introduction (approximately 150 words)
- Paragraph 1
- Paragraph 2
- Paragraph 3
- Conclusion (approximately 150 words)

Grading criteria and feedback
You will receive feedback on their reflection from your Online Learning Facilitator in order to provide an indication of the strength of your work. This feedback will create a formative foundation in the subject knowledge and will provide a framework for your responses in Assessment 2 and 3. Your assessment will be marked according to the following grading criteria:
- Criterion 1: Depth of reflection and application of leadership theory to a broader context of personal and professional life (50%).
- Criterion 2: Demonstrated understanding of relevant theories and concepts through appropriate application (30%).
- Criterion 3: Required components and parts of the assessment, including evidence of questionnaires and referencing (10%).
- Criterion 4: Structure, presentation, communication style and language (10%).
