The problem of professional practice that I am exploring is if English language learners are misdiagnosed as belonging in special education due to language disabilities rather than having gaps in their English language abilities. I began by brainstorming possible keywords. I started my search with ERIC. I chose to start here because ERIC is a large database resulting in a large amount of results (Gall, Gall, and Borg, 2015). I also reviewed how to find articles especially reviewing the section on key words from the Capella library (n.d., Retrieved November 8, 2019). I refined my search to find research more in line with what I was looking for. I also searched using Education Research Complete. I was able to find the two research reports that I used in my paper for this week. One was a quantitative study that looked at whether Ells are disproportionately represented in special education in Massachusetts (Yamakaki and Luk, 2018). This study was particularly of interest to me because I work Massachusetts. The second report was a qualitative report that was a case study of an elementary school in Oregon which looked at the district’s used of bilingual special education program influence on how Ells qualify for special education placement (Brown and Ault, 2015).
In my search, I also found articles that were not research reports but were on my topic and by reading them, I was able to refine my keywords to find the research articles. I also looked through the reference lists on these articles to see if any of the references would be helpful to me.

For this assignment, you will identify a topic of interest to your professional practice. Select a problem or issue in your workplace or future field which you have some interest in solving or improving. For example, perhaps you are an elementary teacher with an interest in improving student engagement.
Then, search the library databases for educational research articles. Find two research reports that address your topic and problem. The research reports must be from the last five years, and must be peer-reviewed, original research articles from a journal.
