Book Test: I Came a Stranger by Hilda Policheck

Answer each of the following questions by putting the cursor in the place where it says “Answer.”
The purpose of this test is to demonstrate to me that you read this book. That means you must answer the questions with specific examples from the book. That also means that you should not submit vague answers about immigrants and working conditions that someone who has not read the book could give. You are reading about some very personal examples, so share those things in your submission. And, of course, don’t use the same examples from the book more than once, with a possible except for question 1 & 2.
I prefer that you do not use any quotations from Stranger but that you use your own words to answer the questions. If you use a few short quotations from the book, use quotation marks and put the page number next to the quotation. However, remember that I prefer that you always use your own words.
Hilda Questions
- Describe at least five jobs that Hilda held. What conditions did she face at those jobs? Look at conditions broadly. This can be actual physical conditions, but also policy and rules, discrimination, arbitrary firings, etc. Don’t simply say, long hours, low pay, bad working conditions because that does not show me you read the book. After looking at her experience, compare it to working conditions you learned about while taking notes for Test 1. Do you think her experience was typical of most immigrants? Explain.

Include in your answer the fact that both Hilda and her mother were widows with small children to raise. What did Dena, her mother, do to take care of her family? What did Hilda do? How did Hilda follow her mother’s example and how did she do things differently? (You may use some examples of jobs from question 1 to demonstrate how Hilda provided for her children.)
