HUMA 2002 0ZB & RELG 2999 0UZ – Fall 2021
FINAL EXAM – Parts 2 & 3
Worth 15 marks (of the total of 20)
Answer each part below. Type your responses in a single file (separate from this one), and submit online in the ‘FINAL EXAM’ area of the course website in either Word or PDF format.
DUE: Friday, December 17th by midnight.
(NOTE: Part 1 is done separately as a timed online multiple choice test. Please ensure you complete ALL parts of the exam before the deadline).
PART 2 (approx. 1 page double-spaced; 5 marks)
Review/skim through each of the course modules, and select ONE of the ‘Further thinking’ boxes (not the ‘Discussion’ boxes), and answer the question in the form of a reflection. Make sure you identify which question you’re answering. There is a wide variety of kinds of questions asked in these boxes, so choose the one you’re most interested in. (The ‘big questions’ boxes are eligible, but you have to attempt to answer all four questions from that religious perspective). Please note: there are some ‘Further thinking’ boxes that won’t work for this question, and are thus excluded. DO NOT use any of the following:
(This may seem like a lot of exceptions, but there are many more that are available to select from!)
PART 3 (no set length – as long as it needs to be; 10 marks)
Answer the following essay question as fully as possible (ten marks). Answer as thoroughly and thoughtfully as you can, addressing all parts.
One of the things the world’s major religions have addressed is what constitutes the ‘good life’: what makes a purposeful and meaningful life, lived well and according to the principles of good.
Choose TWO of the ‘families’ of religion (NOT two specific religions!), and discuss how each ‘family’ would generally approach answering the question of what constitutes the ‘good life’. Discuss each ‘family’ in turn, explaining the ethical framework in each. Touch on what higher purpose/goal one’s action in this life serves (if any) and to which a sense of meaning is tied. Make reference to specific examples (ideas, practices) within each, from specific religions within the ‘family’, to help explain; you should have at least TWO examples for EACH ‘family’.
You may note any internal differences within these groupings, but the idea is to broadly compare and contrast the religious ‘families’.
