It is critical for a health care manager to acquire effective communication skills with employees, peers, and superiors. In light of this, consider the following:
Discuss the many forms of communication as well as the obstacles to communication.
Is it true that good communication fosters trust in a company?
Is electronic communication beneficial or detrimental to corporate communication?*PROFESSOR’S NOTES*
As a healthcare manager, you must be able to communicate effectively. In this week’s post, you’ll be asked to respond to three primary questions about communication. Because communication is such a broad topic that might vary depending on your context, region, and department make-up, I anticipate a wide range of responses. It also depends heavily on the individuals that make up the department you’re in charge of.
It’s critical to be conscious of both verbal and nonverbal communication when contemplating communication throughout your department. Words have meaning, but how people use their bodies in connection with them can modify that meaning. Eye contact is also an important aspect of nonverbal communication in most settings in the United States, however this varies depending on one’s cultural background. Many people use their hands, as well as adjustments in posture and head position, to make a statement.
Consider this question: How have you seen verbal and nonverbal communication used in your workplace, or even in your own family or circle of friends?
Employees have had to learn to manage and negotiate digital communication channels in addition to face-to-face contact in the digital age. In digital communication, tone, word choice, and topic vary a lot. When communicating via email or text, nonverbals and even voice tone are lost. Certain punctuation can be misinterpreted as well. In digital communication, the usage of capital letters or exclamation marks is frequently misinterpreted as shouting or yelling. Having said that, technological communication has made it easier to receive information in a timely and effective manner. Electronic communication has been sluggish to take hold in a field that still uses fax machines (yes, they still exist! ), but improvements in the last five years and technological advancements have made it more widespread. Furthermore, the COVID-19 outbreak has made electronic communication nearly mandatory in any clinical setting. Another aspect of patient confidentiality to consider while using electronic communication is patient confidentiality. Many healthcare systems have IT solutions in place to comply with HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations, but it’s something to keep in mind whenever electronic communication is utilized in the medical field.
Consider the following: Have you used electronic communication as an employee or manager in the healthcare industry? Have you been asked to communicate with your healthcare providers via electronic means as a patient or consumer?
