Problem statement
Problem: A basketball coach in a high school team has observed that some team members have meals (like fries and pizzas) some few minutes not exceeding an hour before their daily practice routine. The coach has a strong urge to know if the food affects the way they perform on the court. He is determined to see the difference between the players who take a meal and those who do not receive a meal before the game in a standard full game of basketball.
Statement of the problem: Do players who take a meal within an hour before the game starts have a higher performance rate than the players who do not take s meal within the same hour before the game?
Variables: Meals and basketball performance.
The statement (implies empirical measurement): The differentiation of basketball performance between two teams, players who took a meal, and players who did not receive a meal and played in the same match.
The purpose: The coach is worried that the players who consume the food before the game may have less performance power in the match and might be the reason for poor performance in their high school basketball championship. He is determined to research the information he has to push for further research on this idea.
The proposed research study is:
- Select the best players and divide them into two equal teams.
- The first team will take a meal voluntarily that they wish within an hour before the game starts.
- The second team will take an oath testifying that they will not have a meal at least three hours before the game.
- The teams will compete fairly with each other.
- The final scores of both the teams will be recorded and observed.
The meal, in this case, will be the independent variable because it is the variable being used as one team takes a meal while the other side does not take any meal for some hours. The final score is the dependent variable.
The coach’s hypothesis is: Students taking a meal within the hour before starting a basketball game will experience poor results than players who avoid a meal at least three hours before the game begins.
