According to Forbes magazine, Toastmasters is “growing like crazy” at Fortune 500 companies such as Google and Apple. Executives realize it’s not enough to be brilliant — you must communicate well at a job interview, work meeting, etc.; public speaking skills are critically important. Here is more information:

View these two YouTube presentations by the winners of the annual international Toastmasters speech contest. Each one is about seven to eight minutes long.

We can learn a lot from these world champions, as each of them show excellence in just about every speech element. For the Information Presentation, you will be judged on these same speech elements, so it’s instructive to witness perfection or near-perfection for each one. Here are some speech elements, explained in depth in the Presentations Online lecture (see Module for the Youtube link for this presentation):
sustained, direct eye contact
illustrative gestures
purposeful movement
confident demeanor and enthusiasm
vocal variety
pauses instead of “filler words”
attention step at or near the start of the speech
memorable idea/ideas to close the speech
audience connection, though just in “I See Something 2014”
After you’ve viewed the speeches, review them and find excellence in one speech element for each one. Choose a different element from your group member; don’t choose the same one. Start by writing the speech’s title–“I See Something 2014” “Outsmart; Outlast 2016”—and choose one speech element from the list above, from #1 to #9. Write the minute and second/seconds where this speech element is shown, and write 1-2 sentences to explain how/why this part of the speech shows the speech element. Also, answer this question in 1-2 sentences: How do you plan to aim for this kind of perfection regarding this speech element in your upcoming presentation, and improve upon your own weaknesses/errors from previous Impromptus/presentations?
Example of how to start: “I See Something 2014,” 3. purposeful movement, 1:00 to 1:20 time frame. Explanation of 1-2 sentences . . . Answer the question above in 1-2 sentences.
Do the same for the other speech. Again, don’t choose the same speech element as your group member. So you will have a total of 4-8 sentences in total for this first post.
