Description/Paper Instructions
Hospital/Research Hopewell Hospital
Instructions: Use the template below to create your customized MEAP. Each of the components should be completed between you and your team members. Your team will create a factitious health facility. You will be required to identify people in the company to do specific jobs for the MEAP, these people can be invented but will require you to include specific details that make them qualified for each position.
Hospital/Research Hopewell Hospital
Scenario: In the past three days, Hurricane Calamity currently in the Atlantic Ocean, shifted its projected course, and your location is in the pathway of the eye of the storm. Hurricane Calamity is expected to be a Category 4 hurricane with tremendous winds and rains.
MEAP Abstract:
In this section, please include a brief abstract about your assigned healthcare facility and your scenario. Use the healthcare organizations website to gather background and additional information to help you develop your plan.
- Company Information
You should provide the location and background information of the health facility, including the kind of facility, and the kind of care it provides for its patients. For this project specifically, please include demographics such as building size, number of floors, average number of patients, type and average number of staff required during the shifts, etc.
- Contact Information
Provide contact information for at least three important figures in the company, make sure to include their name, job title, phone numbers (home and office/cell), email and a brief explanation of why these three employees are the ones that need to be called. Also, include the departmental personnel that would need to be contacted.
- Alerts
Decide which kind of alert system will be used during this kind of emergency. Here are some examples of different alerts:
- The sounding of an alarm
- Public Address system announcement
- Verbal announcement
Make sure to describe any visual alerts and how they will appear as well as script out any alerts that require one.
- Policy
Describe in detail, what the evacuation policy will be in the event of this situation (i.e. who should evacuate first, where should employees go, who should they contact, under what conditions would they be allowed to return into the building, what should they tell patients, etc.). If evacuation is not required, how will the facility be impacted by the community emergency.
- Your submission should include a minimum of 2 paragraphs to address each component. Use your creativity to think about how a man-made or environmental disaster would impact your assigned healthcare facility.
- Routes
For this section, you should describe the different evacuation routes for the section(s) of the health facility that will be impacted. There should be maps that outline the exit routes for the sections of the building, that are impacted. Include an outside map, if personnel will evaluate to an outside location. Please also write a paragraph describing the evacuation routes, who should receive copies of these maps and where they will be posted.
- Extinguishers
Determine if your facility has built-in fire extinguishers and/or smoke detectors. Identify the employees, in the impacted section of the facility that would be responsible for portable fire extinguishers, as needed. In this section, also designate an appropriate distance apart per each fire extinguisher. Also mark them on the map in the Routes section.
- Operations
In this section, you should describe the appropriate evacuation procedure for the employees, designate specific employees to work from home and spread critical information throughout the company should the office be unusable. Designate at least three specific employees that should stay in the building until they are sure others have evacuated (unless it becomes a life or death situation) and make sure to explain who they are, their contact information, their position and what qualifies them to stay in the facility for longer than others.
In addition, if the facility supports a community disaster, indicate personnel, that will be called to action, how many additional employees will be needed, departments that will be needed to support the disaster and if any ongoing appointments will need to be cancelled. i.e. radiology or surgery appointments. For example, Baptist Hospital is the designated support facility for the FSCJ North campus.
- Duties
Describe whether any departments or employees are required to perform medical or rescue duties during the emergency evacuation situations and what those duties may be. Select at least three employees and include their name, contact information, job title and what about them or their position would require them to perform duties during the emergency.
Explain what additional departments and personnel duties will be required to support a community disaster
- Assembly
Select a location in walking distance from the facility that employees and patients can gather to wait for the emergency crews to clear the building or for the drill to clear. Make sure to include a map as well as walking directions from the building. Also, describe the disbursement of this information to the employees.
- Accounting
Create a procedure for collecting all employee contact information, including a description of where this information will be kept (at least one backup). Create a procedure for accounting for all employees using this information and designate at least three employees to be in charge of accounting for all other employees, include the names, positions, contact information for these employees and a brief explanation as to why they were chosen for this duty.
- Enter additional evacuation plan and procedures
Using the information that you learned in the module and your previous knowledge, describe at least one additional procedure not already listed above. Make sure to include a brief explanation of why you believe this should be included in the plan.
