History of The Social Ill Research Essay
Choose a work of social practice art that you find engaging and that you have learned about from Modules 6 to 11 . In an essay 3 to 5 pages in length, address the following 2 areas in your writing:
Research:
- Describe the social ill that this work seeks to correct- eg- income inequality, racial issues, feminist issues, labor, etc…
- Give a brief history of the social ill it seeks to correct and where this work fits in to that overall history. You will need to do some research for this section including the history of the social ill.
- Describe the work of social practice art in detail. Make sure to cite your work in this section if necessary. Describe how the piece was executed- how was it planned, who participated, how was it received, what materials were used, where was it cited, how long it took, etc.
- Please include a picture of the social practice artwork at the end of your paper (not counted in paper length).
Critical Analysis:
- Provide a critical analysis of the work of art. Include and reference critical reviews of the work you are writing about that were written by others. Analyze those reviews- Were the reviews you found of this work critical? Why or why not? Did they ask the right questions of the work, hold it to a higher standard, or were they non-critical? (keep in mind some of the early readings in this class that discussed the difficult nature of critiquing social practice art)
- What are the terms on which this work is judged- what are the terms that make this a “successful” project? Was this work successful? Why or why not? Be specific in your response.
- Do you expect this project to effect a lasting change? Why or why not? (eg- will it effect long-lasting change?)
- What could have been done differently to make this work more successful or have a greater impact on society? Be specific and describe specific changes you would make.
Format and Policies:
- This is the basic assignment for your short research paper that should be 3 – 5 pages in length. This length does not include the works cited page, illustrations, or the header and essay title. A whole page of writing goes all the way down to the bottom of the page, not to the top of the page.
- Each paragraph should be four to six sentences with the first line indented.
- Use correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
- Double-space your writing
- Left-align your paragraphs on the page (not centered or justified)
- Use a 12-point font
- Use 1″ margins- ON ALL 4 SIDES!
- Do not skip lines between paragraphs.
- Provide a header and an essay title (or title page)
- Since you are using cited sources, you will need to include a works cited page or bibliography and use proper citations in the text (Chicago format is standard for art writing). When you include a works cited or bibliography page, it should be on its own page.
- Do not email me your paper! Upload your work to Blackboard as a .doc, .docx, or PDF file.
- No late papers will be accepted- do not wait until the last minute to submit your assignment!
- Lastly, all of your paper must come in at the same time and in the same submission. Do not submit your paper and then email me images or works cited because you forgot them. I will not accept any emailed pieces of your paper- it is your responsibility to collate your paper and submit it as one document. You have 3 chances to upload your paper, so if you make a mistake, please upload a corrected version. I will usually grade your last submission.
