- Historical Development of Judaism
Judaism is not a monolithic religion. It is neither a single culture nor does it exist in only one form. In this section, the aim is to get a sense of the cultural contexts of Judaism and the historical origins and circumstances of the main branches of Judaism in the word today.
- The Cultural Centers of Judaism
Sephardic Judaism and Ashkenazi Judaism represent two of the main historical and cultural centers. Read the brief article at https://www.jewfaq.org/ashkseph.htm to learn more about each. Be sure to note also the term “Mizrachi” in the box in the upper right corner and the geographical context for this term.
Next, read the article at https://www.patheos.com/library/judaism/historical-development/missions-spread-changes-regional-adaptations. This article describes the experience of Jews in a variety of cultural contexts.

After you have read the overviews for each, choose one of the three and read through the rest of the information under the headings at the top of the page (Origins, History, Beliefs, Rituals and Worship, Ethics and Community). - The Example of Elie Wiesel
On the story of Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust, and his life and work afterwards, read http://www.pbs.org/eliewiesel/life/index.html. The term “Kabbalah,” that appears in the reading refers to a Jewish mystical tradition. If you are interested in knowing more, see https://www.britannica.com/topic/Kabbala. Also watch the brief video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QQlKx5qtrg. You do not need to respond in writing, but think about and be ready to discuss:
- How is a sense of vocation evident in Elie Wiesel?
- Aside from the obvious fact that Wiesel was Jewish and the Holocaust was directed mainly against Jews, how did Judaism shape and inform Wiesel’s understanding of life and the world?
Don’t forget to post this study guide on the Moodle site when you are done.
