HIST 495 Circleville Massacre Project Proposal
this two- to three-page assignment (600 to 900 words) allows you to describe the purpose and scope of your project.
This two-part assignment
Project Proposal
In your proposal, carefully describe the parameters of your paper and the data you will or might use. These parameters should include such considerations as the time frame covered, the geographical limits, and other factors that may be relevant; for instance, the range or kinds of people, organizations, ideologies, and any other categories that would help the reader understand the boundaries of the project. In general, indicate how you will treat your topic, what aspect of that topic you want to highlight, and you’re working thesis (where you are planning to take your readers—your professor and peers—with your completed project).
Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography is a companion assignment to the project proposal. You will list, in proper Chicago (Turabian) citation style format, the primary and secondary sources you are consulting for your project. You will also provide annotations that describe the thesis of each secondary source and the key evidence found in each primary source.
In these two related assignments you will need to explain, in two to three pages of double-spaced text (600-900 words), how you intend to limit the scope of your paper. The Project Proposal should carefully describe the parameters of your paper and the data you will or might use. Start off by defining your topic and the historical question related to your topic that you will answer through your original research paper in History 495. The other parameters should include such considerations as the timeframe covered, the geographical limits, and other factors that may be relevant, such as the range or kinds of people, organizations, ideologies, and any other categories that would help the reader understand the boundaries of your project. In other words, explain how you are going to treat your topic.
Describe the following regarding your topic in two to three well written pages:
what is your topic
what aspect of that topic will be your focus?
your question about the topic
the scope of your topic in terms of geography (such as only one nation or a region or the entire world)
a finite period of time you will examine
primary sources you will use (here be specific in terms of where you will find them. Rather than simply saying “the Internet” or an archive, name the digital database. Name the archive.)
what is new about your approach. Specifically, identify the arguments that have already been made or the approaches that have already been taken, and clearly articulate what is new about your proposed project. In other words, will this project use new evidence? If so, what new evidence? Will this project use an approach that has never been used with this topic? If so, what approach? Will this project make an original argument? If so, how will this argument be different from existing arguments? In other words, what new thing will this project contribute to the discourse on this topic?
what historical approach you will use (review your history 289 materials for these), and any other information that will give us an idea of where you are planning to take us with your completed project.
One note about historical approaches: political history and military history are not historical approaches; they are sub-fields of history. So, pick your historical approaches from the following: Empiricism, Materialism (Marxist, class-based, and Economic History), the Social Science approaches, the New Social and New Cultural Histories, Gender, and the “posts” (Postmodern, Post structural, and Postcolonial).
Be sure to include a conclusion that summarizes the parameters, access to primary sources, what is new about your topic, and your historical approach.
The Annotated Bibliography portion of this assignment will consist of an annotated bibliography of at least four (4) primary sources related to your topic. However, an A is above and beyond what is required. For an A, include at least six (6) primary sources related to your topic. In HIST 495, 7 will be required, so getting 6 now will put you much closer to the requirement for HIST 495. Title this section “Primary Sources.” The bibliography page should follow the models in the Chicago Style guidelines for form of entries and general page layout. In your annotations, write 3 to 5 sentences about each source in which you explain why it is primary and what that source contains in terms of primary source research material related to your topic.
Submit your Project Proposal and your Annotated Bibliography as one file via this assignment. Start off with the Project Proposal and then do the Annotated Bibliography. Your assignment should be submitted as a Word file (.doc or .docx).
Topic the Circleville Massacre
My new is to explore why government entities did not intervene in the situation before it led to the massacre of the Piute.
Claim: Utah government officials had made a serious effort into fostering the relationships with peaceful Indians within the territory, however their efforts failed due to territorial official’s lack of interdiction local affairs, which resulted in the Circleville massacre becoming a casualty of the Black Hawk War.
Warrant: Fear, hatred, mistrust, and a lack of communication are factors that lead to atrocities committed in the midst of war.
For my project on the Circleville Massacre during the Black Hawk War, the “new” will be the introduction of a new question to examine the topic. Moreover, many secondary sources strive to complete the picture of this phase of Utah history. These secondary sources indicate that the Black Hawk war resulted from tensions between the white settlers and the native Indians. Frequent raids had helped to instill fear and hatred among the whites. The emotions were exaggerated, making it hard to differentiate peaceful Indians from renegades. However, they fail to explain why there was no intervention from government officials. Therefore, the focus of my research will be examining why there was no intervention from government officials before it led to the massacre of the Piute in Circleville. I will be using both the Cultural approach and the post-colonial approach for my research. Although these two approaches have been used before, they will assist in presenting my new argument.
