HIST 122 The Effects of Technological Breakthroughs Discussion Replies
Description
Just need two responses to these posts :
1) Pavlac provides a more generalized description of the appliances made during the Industrial Revolution, as the space and objective of the text book dictate. He lists the spinning jenny (1764) as one of the first devices that spurred up productivity and reduced costs, making skilled workers be replaced by unskilled laborers. In such a scenario, factory owners could reduce costs and increase production, quality, and revenues.
- Guest recounts the application of the steam loom, which was an improvement to the spinning Jenny. The invention starts in 1785 and goes to the opening decade of the 1800s, thus about two decades from the invention of the spinning jenny. The English still had problems with jenny’s improvement. The steam loom was the product of not one person but of a series of upgrades made by several innovators (Catwright, Grimshaw, Austin). It would not be until 1803 that the dressing frame was invented, which fostered dressing the warp, and the quality of the yarn followed.
Both Guest and Pavlac support the idea that technological improvements have greatly increased productivity (Pavlac, 89; Guest, 48). The effect was such that it was acceptable to refer to the advances as a revolution.
In sum, it is only in detail that the primary source challenges Pavlac’s account, but the general consensus is that the role of mechanics increased while the importance of single weavers (mostly women) decreased and was replaced with cheaper labor.
2)
- How does the Congress of Vienna attempt to “fix” the changes caused by the French Revolution? How successful is it in doing so?
After the defeat of Napoleon, Austria and other victorious empires met to discuss the future of France and European powers. These discussions lead to the development of Conservatism.
Conservatism- a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change.
Which in turn led to the absolutist’s dynasties being restored to power and in France Napolean’s relatives being exiled or put into retirement. Then by the reassertion of power between the great powers of Europe: Britian, France, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. This being done by the Dutch and Belgians falling under rule of the orange dynasty, the Sardinia-savoy-piedmont kingdom barring alpines access to Italy. Also, by Austria having control over northern Italy, then Prussia acquiring territories in Rhineland, and lastly Prussia and Austria having joint control over the German confederation. Something else established by the congress of Vienna was the Holy Alliance and Quadruple Alliance. These were meant to help establish cooperative ruling between the different countries by both religious agreement/understanding and establishing a status quo and a treaty to prevent warfare. These measurements worked for a bit but were overall not effective as there were still later revolutions and at a point some of the monarchies were forced to abdicate their thrones and were replaced by other rulers chosen by their people. Also due to France regaining its power later on and being able to replace Britain as a major European power.
