In this assignment, you will analyze a topic of significance to Middle East history as reflected in news articles published in the Arabic press in the century between 1879 to 1979. You will critically reflect on how your topic was portrayed and interpreted in a given era. On another, it requires you to engage in uncovering information that may help to solve a historical ‘problem’ related to the topic you are studying. (The Research Report Should be 600 Words).
These are the general project requirements:
- Analyze two news articles from the period related to your topic.
- Use at least two secondary sources to provide historical context about the topic.
- Interpret your sources in the context of the historical problem you are addressing.
To undertake your project, follow these six steps:
- Select a Topic. Choose a topic of interest to you and familiarize yourself with its history by doing research in at least two secondary sources (journal articles or other scholarly works).
- Develop a Research Question. After you have become familiar with the topic broadly, through researching secondary sources, identify a research question that your project will seek to address. It is alright if your research question is one that historians have not yet considered about your topic, however it should be one that is answerable. The point of such a question is to inform how you will proceed in interpreting the primary sources you have. Your research question is your starting point.
- Research News Articles. Once you have defined your research topic and question, do keyword searches in the Arabic newspaper digital archives listed below to locate relevant articles. When searching for articles, refine your search by place and/or period. After locating a batch (ideally 5-10 articles), read through them and assess whether they can provide material to answer (directly/indirectly) your research question. If so, then proceed to the next step. If not, either modify your research question or expand your search (i.e., other newspaper archives, periods of time, regions etc..) and repeat this step.
- Analyze. Select two news articles that meet the above requirements. FIRST, identify the main argument promoted in each article. What is the bias of the author(s) on the event/topic you are researching? (what explanation or line of thinking does the author stress in their article? What do you propose might be the basis for their rationale?). SECOND, how does the article address your research question (in other words, what evidence can you find in the article that can be used to answer your research question?). THIRD, how are the authors’ views on the topic different/similar from those of the secondary sources you consulted to gain historical context on your topic (in step 2 above)? (in other words, do the primary sources you are studying [the news articles] confirm or depart from the historical interpretation given in the secondary sources you have used?)
- Write. Write your research report. Your report should be 600 words long and give an overview of the research problem, describe how your articles portrayed the event/topic, especially in view of what’s described of your topic in the secondary sources you have reviewed. Lastly, what answers do the two articles shed on your research question? Make sure to use complete paragraphs, have an introduction and conclusion, and to use citations (APA style) for all referenced primary and secondary sources.
To develop a research question on your topic, it is helpful to consider how that topic may have affected the social, cultural, political or economic history of the country to which it relates (if it is specific to a country) or connect it to other developments/topics in the Middle East at the time. For example, choosing ‘The Arab Feminist Union,’ you may wish to consider research questions like, ‘How did the Arab Feminist Union increase women’s political power in Egypt?’; or, if choosing ‘Independence of Gulf States,’ you may wish to consider ‘what role did the spread of Pan-Arabism play in the independence movements of Gulf states?.’
