Description / paper instructions
Please follow the professor’s advice to rewrite the op-ed. I think the introduction needs change. We need to point out why helicopter safety is important to the public maybe? Do not need to 100% rely on my draft, just focus on what the professor said. Please check all the documents before you write! Do some research before you write. Please remember this is an op-ed, use op-ed format to write. Essay 2: Op-Ed Essay/TED Presentation
For your second essay, you will write an opinion piece appropriate for a newspaper with national circulation, or, in the case of an issue relating to a particular city/region, for the leading newspaper in that city/region. Your op-ed will advocate a solution to the conflict you wrote about for your Executive Summary; your solution can be the same or similar to what you recommended at the end of that report, or it can be different. Since the solution is the focus of this essay, it will require more detail than the Recommendation section of the Executive Summary did. (If your topic is a conflict that has resolved in some way, your op-ed will be focused on assessing the resolution as successful or unsuccessful—that is, whether it is fair and/or likely to bring good outcomes—and whether it should be emulated in similar conflicts in the future.)
Like most op-eds, yours will be written for a general audience that is not expected to be expert in the subject, so you will have to briefly introduce the issue early in your essay. However, one of your goals in writing the op-ed is to try to effect the resolution you’re seeking, and so you should write it in a way that will appeal to one or more parties with influence over the conflict. That could be one of the parties to the conflict, and/or someone outside the conflict with the power to exert pressure on it (such as a government, consumers, or other stakeholders). For instance, Taylor Swift’s open letter to Apple praises Apple as a progressive company, and in doing so appeals to three audiences: the general public, which will see her as fair-minded; Apple itself; and fans of Apple, who are likely to be a disproportionate share of Apple Music’s customer base.
The audiences you are appealing to will largely determine your tone in the essay. For instance, in an op-ed about a union dispute, you would not direct harsh criticism towards either the union or management if you were hoping to influence that side. However, you might do so if you were targeting a different audience, such as a pro- or anti-union governor. Keep in mind, though, that your need to appeal to the general public will require you to be at least somewhat even-handed in tone; the general public tends to be turned off by attacks.
Your op-ed will have to respond to at least one counter-argument, in which you engage seriously with a leading argument against your proposal (or for an alternate proposal) and use evidence and reasoning to show this point does not invalidate your proposal. There are a number of ways to build a counter-argument; we’ll discuss some of these in class.
The use of graphics in op-ed pieces online is becoming more common; however, in print, text-only is the norm. Thus, your op-ed cannot include any graphics, tables, etc. (although your TED talk can; see below). Instead of in-text citations, you will give footnotes or endnotes that refer us to your References page.
The TED Talk
As a component of your op-ed, you will deliver a 7-8 minute presentation arguing for your position. Using visual displays, including charts, tables, or other numerical graphics, you will introduce us to the issue, explain your solution to the issue, offer evidence that your solution will be effective, and anticipate likely objections. You will also field one or two questions at the end of your presentation.
Your presentation will be graded on the clarity and effectiveness of its content, on your visual displays, and on your public speaking skills, including eye contact, body language, and the clearness and interest of your speaking voice. I recommend that you speak from notes rather than a full script; if you do use a script, make sure to make eye contact and to rehearse it thoroughly to avoid sounding robotic or wooden.
The presentation assignment is styled on the TED Talk format, and we will be studying TED Talks in class for ideas on making our presentations more effective. However, TED Talks are not the only workable presentation format, and you are not expected to hew closely to any formula in order to make an effective presentation.
Important Dates (see CCLE for details):
Background Helicopters have become a widely used mode of transport in modern days. However, helicopter accidents have become so prevalent to the extent that many people fear to use them. The tragic Los Angeles-area crash that led to the death of Kobe Bryant, her daughter and eight others is one of the latest helicopter tragedies. The relevant government agencies guarantee helicopter safety through regulations, enforcement, training, and aircraft maintenance. Why Helicopter Safety important to us (add background, evtol definition, statistics of people using helicopter, evtol future plan, etc) E-VTOL aircrafts are gradually being developed, and it likely that the many people across the world will shift towards using them[1]. The tragedy raised several speculations about the safety and growth of helicopter transport today and much-awaited Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (E-VTOL) aircrafts. The level of safety guaranteed by the manufacturers of E-VTOL is expected to determine its performance in the aerospace market. The E-VITOL air operations need to be conducted carefully. However, it is evident that the National Safety Board (NSB), has put minimal effort on operators when investigating several helicopter accidents. The NTSB has put most of its efforts in investigating the engineering causes of an accident; hence the operators, for example, the pilots have been left out in such investigations. This is despite the fact that operators play a significant role in the aerospace industry, and they are more likely to be the immediate cause of such accidents. NTSB is charged with the responsibility of determining the probable cause of an accident, and there is no reason for excluding some stakeholders during such investigations. Relevant recommendations and solutions Prevention is better than cure and therefore, NTSB and other relevant agencies should ensure that the operators are adequately trained to provide to minimize the risk of accidents[2].For example, many accidents occur after the pilot loses control over the helicopter once they fly into the clouds. The combination of several factors such as autopilots and the regular instrument flight training for the pilot ensures that the pilot can fly safely. It is the responsibility of the operator to avail all these logistics[3]. Yet, most of them skimp on technology and training as a cost-saving measure, hence, increasing the risk of such accidents occurring. Other certain Regulation should also be able to reduce the risk of helicopter transportation. The United States Helicopter Safety Team should discourage pilots from flying their helicopters when the weather is unfavorable to minimize these accidents. Helicopters are used in extreme dangerous situations such as flying low near obstacles like electrical wires, and therefore pilots should be well trained to tackle such situations. The operators must follow the regulations laid down by their respective federal governments to minimize the number of accidents that might occur. The operators must follow the regulations laid down by their respective federal governments to minimize the number of accidents that might occur[4]. Most of the aircraft accidents occurring today are not due to engineering failures but due to pilot errors and therefore pilots should take their responsibility of preserving human life Nevertheless, military precision should be adhered during the maintenance and inspection of the aircrafts to ensure that they are fit and safe to fly[5]. Pilots should, therefore, respect their work ethics, and understand the value of human life and do whatever it takes to protect human life. They should be updated continuously on the current trends in the aerospace industry and learn to adapt to the new changes in the industry[6].All the stakeholders in this sector should adhere to the U.S. Federal Aviation Regulations to ensure that travelers who use helicopter transport are safe[7]. Recently, Congressman Brad Sherman, D-California, formulated a bill that will see the existing federal safety standards for helicopters strengthened. The Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant Helicopter Safety Act was formulated after the death of the legendary basketball player died in a helicopter crash[8]. The bill is aiming at ensuring that all helicopters are fitted with Terrain Awareness and Warning System. This is a great example of how government should do to solve the problem, and such legislation should be enacted soonest possible to ensure that helicopter safety is improved. Shawn, your op-ed should be more focused on advancing a clear argument and giving the reasons for it. Don’t get distracted on material that doesn’t really relate to your argument–for instance, E-VTOL doesn’t seem to affect the question of what we should do about helicopter safety. Instead, establish from early on what we should do and give evidence why. Also remember to give evidence that there is a problem, other than just Kobe’s death. Work with the Writing Center on this one. My opinions: from the comment above, professor said that E-VTOL may not be that related. For me when I mention E-VTOL, I just kinda want to find some evidences to prove that why the helicopter safety is important to the public. Please help me to change it and find a way to reflect the important of helicopter safety in the public. Maybe use some statistics? Please do whatever you want to make this op-ed better and to meet what the professor want! Please delete the necessary reference and add whatever reference you want. Thank you! I will tip you if the professor satisfy for what you write! References Bye, R. J., Johnsen, S. O., & Lillehammer, G. (2018).
