Health Information Systems Infrastructure and Organizational Structure
Assignment: Diagram the Information Technology that Supports Health Information Systems
PART 1
System diagrams are a common tool for analyzing information systems. You will need to be conversant in both reading and developing these diagrams to administrate the delivery of health services effectively. For example, Figure 7 shows how users, connecting through their computer, access a healthcare billing system and enterprise data warehouse within their organization. Additionally, through a firewall, the users access Office 365 via the Internet.
Consider again the scenario of a local healthcare organization seeking to expand its telemedicine program. Using this week’s resources, create a system diagram depicting the technology architecture that will be necessary to support these expanded programs. Some free infographic tools include PowerPoint, Piktochart, Canva, and Venngage. Alternatively, you can sketch the diagram by hand, scan or photograph the image, and upload the image. Be sure to include a brief description of the sketch you created and ensure the sketch is clear and easy to read.
Heads-Up: This diagram will support your Signature Assignment as a component of the system analysis project phase.
Your diagram should include at a minimum:
Servers and databases. For this diagram, indicate a separate server for each information system, including at a minimum the EHR, billing system, email and files, and data warehouse.
Optionally, you may show some of these services as being provided by cloud services, such as Microsoft Office 365 or Google Docs for office productivity software. Another example would be using a cloud-based EHR.
User devices, including desktop computers, mobile computers, tablets, and mobile phones.
Wired and wireless networks connecting servers, user devices, and the Internet.
In addition to your diagram, write a summary describing the overall structure of your system.
Length: 1-page diagram, 1-page text summary of your diagram
References: Include a minimum of 3 scholarly resources.
PART 2
Assignment 2: Prepare an Organizational Chart
In addition to the technology infrastructure that supports health information services, personnel is required to service, manage, and—most importantly— use these services. Just like the systems diagram shows the structure of the technology infrastructure, an organization chart shows the structure of the human resources that support health information services.
For this assignment, you will create an organizational chart, similar to Figure 8, depicting the organization of the personnel in the ongoing telemedicine expansion scenario you considered during this week’s first assignment.
Use this week’s resources as a guide to identifying the typical organization of responsibilities in providing healthcare information services. Simultaneously, identify the clients of the services: who will use them? Major user groups you should include, at a minimum, are clinical providers, clinical administrators, strategic leadership, medical billers, and medical coders.
Using this collected information, create an organizational chart. Your chart should include at a minimum:
· Three rows of personnel in information services: senior management, management, and analysts for particular systems, such as networking or EHRs.
· Appropriate division of responsibilities among at least four columns of personnel (e.g., four mid-level managers).
· For each column, identification of the primary client groups and other stakeholders. Who is the primary consumer of the services provided? Who else would be impacted by changes to these services?
In addition to your organizational chart, write 1-2 pages summarizing the expected impact of expanding telemedicine services to each role in the organizational chart. What changes will they be required to make to support this expansion? What additional services will they be required to provide?
Length: 1-page organizational chart, 1-2 pages annotation
References: Include a minimum of 3 scholarly resources
