Harris Seafoods Inc Case Study Analysis
In this case you should write the executive summary and case analysis:
Executive summary: One page, double-space.
Case analysis: Each report should include 3-5 pages of analysis (typed and double-spaced) with references to an unlimited number of tables, figures, and notes attached as appendices. If your analysis section exceeds 5 pages, the TAs will ignore the content on the extra pages (that is, content on pages 6, 7, 8, etc.). The cover page, the executive summary, and the appendices do not count towards the 3-5 pages of analysis. Your report should address the suggested questions for the case (which will be posted on our Blackboard course webpage), but you are strongly encouraged to address additional points you believe to be important for the analysis.
In this case study you have to decide whether the shrimp processing plant is a project that represents a worthwhile addition to Harris Seafoods. For simplicity, you can make the following assumptions:
* Assume that time 0 is 1980
* Assume that the tax rate for Harris Seafoods and the two comparable firms is 48% * Ignore the tax credit of $650,000 that Harris Seafoods is expected to receive in 1981
* Ignore the possibility that Harris Seafoods issues the Industrial Revenue Bonds mentioned on page 5 of the case
* You can conduct your analysis in nominal terms (based on the pro forma income statement in Exhibit 7)
In your analysis, you should address the following points. (As always, your report should be written as a recommendation to the manager that touches upon all of the key issues.).
- Given the information available in the case, how can you calculate/estimate the cash flows that we need to discount?
- Although the various estimates for the project end in 1986, the project will not be over by then. How can you account for this fact in your valuation?
- What is the cost of capital for this project? Discuss the various inputs that are needed to calculate the cost of capital (debt-to-equity ratio, expected return on equity, expected return on debt, etc.)
- Is the data on comparable firms useful for estimating the risk of this project, or can you rely just on Harris Seafoods’ historical data?
- What is the NPV of the project under the WACC approach? Under the APV approach?
- How sensitive are your estimates to your assumptions? Do you recommend undertaking the project?
