Description/Paper Instructions
Global health and public health policy
Global health is the branch of public health that deals with health issues and their determinants on a
global scale. It encompasses a wide range of issues, including infectious diseases, non-communicable
diseases, environmental health, and health systems and policies.
Public health policy, on the other hand, refers to the policies and regulations put in place by
governments and other organizations to improve the health and well-being of populations.
Some of the key areas of global health and public health policy include:
Infectious diseases: Global health efforts are focused on preventing and controlling the spread
of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. This includes the
development and distribution of vaccines and medications, as well as efforts to address the
social and economic factors that contribute to the spread of these diseases.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs): NCDs, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are
responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. Public health policies aimed at reducing the
risk factors for NCDs, such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, are essential
to improve global health.
Environmental health: The environment has a significant impact on human health, and global
health efforts are focused on addressing issues such as air and water pollution, exposure to
toxins, and climate change.
Health systems and policies: Strong and well-functioning health systems are essential to
improve global health. Public health policies aimed at strengthening health systems, such as
increasing funding for health care and improving access to care, are essential to improve global
health.
Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Universal Health Coverage is an important aspect of global
health, which is the concept of ensuring that all people have access to quality health services
without suffering financial hardship. UHC is essential to improve global health and reduce health
disparities.
Health equity: Health equity is the concept of ensuring that everyone has a fair and just
opportunity to be healthy, regardless of their socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and other
factors. Global health policies and programs must prioritize health equity to improve global
health.
To address these issues and improve global health, it important to work at the global, national, and
local level. This includes implementing policies and regulations that protect against environmental
hazards, investing in research and monitoring to better understand global health issues, and working
with international organizations and partners to promote global health.
In conclusion, Global health is the branch of public health that deals with health issues and their
determinants on a global scale. Public health policy, on the other hand, refers to the policies and
regulations put in place by governments and other organizations to improve the health and well-being
of populations.
