One of the many new concepts I have not heard of before is Member Checking. This concept was used to establish credibility for qualitative data. Qualitative data is data that is approximated and interoperated, this data is not usually just numbers.
Member checking is the process in which a participant will review the feedback and interpretations taken during research by the researchers. This can be done while the data is being collected or after the fact. The participant will be able to confirm or deny the legitimacy of the data collected. Five approaches were developed for member checking:
- Having participants review transcripts or transcribed data to confirm how accurate the findings are.
- Conduct and interview the participant in interview form to confirm information
- Conduct an interview with the participant using preliminary data
- Conduct a group interview to analyze the data set
- Conduct a check-in with participants via. letter or in person to confirm analyzed data interpreted by the researchers
For example, a participant of a study may receive a letter asking if the data collected matches their experience. The response of the member checking survey/letter with be added as data to the final study (Polit & Beck, 2019).
I picked this concept because I do believe that it would be a valuable tool to have member checking data included in a final research study. It brings helpful data and more credibility to the study.
