This is the second formative task which will help you develop your Extended Project further.
Once you have completed parts 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 below please submit this task for feedback via Turnitin on the VLE. Your submission title must be:
‘STUDENT NAME – STUDENT NUMBER – GROUP NAME -TUTOR’S NAME’
E.g.: ’Adam Smith-102648-M27-Ben Windle’.

2.1. Structuring your report
In Formative Task 1, you chose a project topic and key research questions which you want to address in your Extended Project. This task will help you with the organisation of your written report. Think about the main goals and aims of your project before you begin to plan your report:
1. What is the working title of your extended project?
To what extent is Nigeria’s economy reliant on oil markets and how could the COVID-19 pandemic impact Nigeria’s economy?
2. What is the overall aim/purpose of your extended project?
The overall purpose is to find out the extent Nigeria’s economy relies on oil markets and how could oil exports affect Nigeria’s economy, also to find out how could COVID-19 pandemic impact the oil prices and so that to impact Nigeria’s economy. In addition, to give solutions to tackle these problems.
3. At this stage, what is your thesis statement (opinion/argument/viewpoint) likely to be? What’s the overall answer to the question?
Crude oil is a limited resource, once this resource is used out, the exporting market of Nigeria will face severe impact. In addition, the fluctuation of oil prices will also affect the Nigeria’s economy in a certain extent. So, Nigeria’s exporting market should be diversified and therefore to attain a comprehensive economic growth and development.
Now, outline how you will break your report into sections in the table below. Clearly outline the objectives and questions that should be answered within each of them, how the information presented in each section relates to the research topic of your project and what sources you currently have for each section.
You can add extra rows in the table below to suit your own report outline.
Section What are the main aims of this section? What question are you trying to answer in this section? How does this section help to answer your overall research question? What sources do you currently have for this section? You need to provide evidence of at least 4 sources with an accurate in-text citation. 1.Introduction The aim of the introduction is to provide some background information, definition of key terms for the reader to get familiar to my topic at the outset. It also outlines the structure of the report and introduces the thesis statement. This section helps me to give a brief description of the oil markets in Nigeria and the changes of the circumstance of Nigeria’s economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the thesis statement shows my point of view and therefore to help me to get response to the overall research question. 1) 2) Nairametrics. (2018, June 11). 2.1 1st sub-section
The aim is to show to what extent is Nigeria’s economy reliant on oil markets by dividing it into three parts: 2.1.1 How many percentages of Nigeria’s GDP is made by the oil exporting?
2.1.2 How many percentages of Nigeria’s exporting market is made by the oil exporting?
2.1.3 What is the impact on Nigeria’s economy due to the fluctuation of oil prices in the past
This section helps me to answer the first part of the topic by showing data and my own analysis of the fact. In addition, it helps me to link to the content of the next sub-section. 1) Nairametrics. (2018, June 11). Chart of the day: Oil contribution to Nigeria’s GDP remains low. Retrieved May 27, 2020, from https://nairametrics.com/2018/06/11/crude-oil-contribution-to-nigerias-gdp-remains-low/

Main argument:
The journal article argued that the economy of Nigeria has to be diversified and so that to attain a comprehensive growth and development.
Helpful content/evidence for your report:
This article has a similar thesis statement with mine, so the content is related to my research topic in a certain extent. It mentioned that agricultural sector has suffered from neglect, mismanagement for a long period, that helps me to think about if it can be the potential sector of Nigeria’s economy in the future.
Quotations:
Apart from the progressive decline in agricultural sector, human resources management has also suffered from years of neglect as a result of the same oil boom in Nigeria. Todaro and Stephen (2006) made it plain that “in the realm of human resources and economic growth of a nation, sheer numbers of people and their skill levels are important, [so also] are cultural outlooks, attitudes towards work, access to information, willingness to innovate and desire for self improvement”.
Citation/References of other sources:
1. Without exaggerating, it is a well-known fact that Nigeria ranks among the most richly endowed nations of the world in terms of natural, mineral and human resources. Nigeria has a variety of both renewable and non-renewable resources, some of which have not yet been effectively tapped. Solar energy, probably the most extensive of the underutilized renewable resources, is likely to remain untapped for some time, and the vast reserves of natural gas produced with crude oil have yet to be fully utilized (Akpan, 2009 & Olumola, 2006).
2. Thus today, agriculture has suffered from long years of neglect, mismanagement, inconsistent and poorly conceived government policies, lack of government meaningful incentive to farmers, lack of basic infrastructure and a lot of bureaucratic bottlenecks in executing policies and agricultural programmes among government agencies (Ariyo, 1997).
How this source will influence your thesis statement:
These sources will influence my thesis statement positively, as it is similar to my thesis statement. I got more ideas of explaining the thesis statement after reading this journal article such as which sector is potential for further development in the future.
Strengths & Limitations

Usefulness:
It helps me to answer the third sub-section a lot and the reason of making my thesis statement like that.
Reliability:
It is trustworthy. As it is published by the Department of Economics and Nnamdi Azikiwe University. In addition, it provides the phone number for you, if you have any inquires of the paper vision or the online vision of this journal article, you can call them.
Context:
It was published on 22 March 2015. The intended audience is the Nigeria’s government and the economist.
Other Sources:
Yes, I have read another journal article which also stated that in the past, agriculture and extraction of solid minerals are the main source contributing Nigeria’s revenue, but after the discovery of petroleum in the global market, Nigeria started to over depend on petroleum and there is neglect of agriculture and other sectors of the economy.
2.3. Paraphrasing attempts

3) Write your first paraphrasing attempt here. You must include an in-text citation (author and year). Remember the paraphrasing techniques you have studied (using synonyms, changing the order of ideas, changing word order (e.g.: passive voice to active voice), changing part of speech).
To better improve Africa’s resilience, it is no doubt that getting involved in varying regions and concernment in a large extent of different sectors energetically which is required by economic diversification are the main factors. They generate healthy growth and high enough of potential. In the meantime, they can better offer up to attain advance in the continent and the long growth of economic. (Uzonwanne, 2015)
4) Paste or write out a second extract from the source you analysed in 2.2. Write your second paraphrasing attempt below.
Original text:
Agriculture has suffered from long years of neglect, mismanagement, inconsistent and poorly conceived government policies, lack of government meaningful incentive to farmers, lack of basic infrastructure and a lot of bureaucratic bottlenecks in executing policies and agricultural programmes among government agencies.
Paraphrasing attempt – remember to include an in-text citation (author and year):
The poor and discordant designed government policies lead to the fact that farmers do not get significant motivation from the government and do not have even an essential infrastructure. In addition, there are lots of mandarine bottlenecks when implementing policies and agricultural schemes in the middle of government agencies. All these bring a huge and negative impact to agriculture including omission and maladministration for a long time. (Uzonwanne, 2015)
