YOUR TASK
Congratulations! You have just been appointed to the position of Knowledge Management Advisor at the Fred Hollows Foundation. See Appendix A for the advertisement for this position.
Your manager has asked you to prepare a report on the use of wiki technologies to address the organisation’s knowledge management needs.
Tutorial activities in weeks 6 ‐7 will help you to build a picture of the Fred Hollows Foundation and its information and knowledge management needs. In the real world, you would be inside the organisation and so could talk with people and analyse internal documentation. We will look into how to use publicly available information in creative ways to make up for this shortfall.
STEP 1 FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH ONENOTE
As you will be using Microsoft’s OneNote platform for planning and managing your analysis, it is strongly recommended that you familiarise yourself with OneNote to start, and use it throughout all the following steps to document your work. In this way, you will not need to spend much additional time in preparing to present your OneNote work in Week 8.
STEP 2 INVESTIGATE AND UNDERSTAND THE ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT
The Fred Hollows Foundation website is a good place to start ‐ https://www.hollows.org/ ‐ with its annual reports containing information about what the organisation does and how it is structured.
You might also look for resources about knowledge management in non‐profit, health and NGO (non‐government organisations) contexts. For example
Ramalingam, B. (2006). Tools for Knowledge and Learning: A Guide for Development and Humanitarian Organisations. Overseas Development Institute. https://www.odi.org/publications/153‐tools‐knowledge‐and‐learning‐guide‐development‐ and‐humanitarian‐organisations
STEP 3 RESEARCH THE USE OF WIKIS IN ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXTS
What parallels can/cannot be drawn between the Fred Hollows Foundation and use of wikis in other organisations? See for example:
Bibbo, D., Michelich, J., Sprehe, E., & Lee, Y. E. (2012). Employing Wiki for knowledge management as a collaborative information repository: an NBC universal case. Journal of Information Technology Teaching Cases, 2(1), 17–28. https://doi.org/10.1057/jittc.2012.1 [Monash University Library Link: https://link‐springer‐ com.ezproxy.lib.monash.edu.au/article/10.1057/jittc.2012.1 ]

What about understanding and conceptualising the use of other knowledge management systems in other contexts? See for example
Walsham, G. (2005). Knowledge Management Systems: Representation and Communication in Context. Systems, Signs & Actions, 1(1), 6–18. http://www.sysiac.org/uploads/1‐1‐Walsham.pdf
Use additional references as needed. You will be expected to cite and reference 3‐5 peer reviewed resources.
STEP 4 FORMULATE IKMS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT
Organise your analysis and requirement statements by applying Becerra‐Fernandez & Sabherwal’s (2014) perspectives on KM Processes:
Knowledge Discovery Knowledge Capture Knowledge Sharing
Knowledge Application
Becerra‐Fernandez, I., & Sabherwal, R. (2014). Chapter 4 Knowledge Management Solutions:
Processes and Systems. In Knowledge Management: Systems and Processes. London, United
Kingdom: Routledge. Retrieved from
http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/monash/detail.action?docID=1883811
For each KM Process formulate a user story (at least one) and a set of requirements (at least four).
STEP 5 ASSESS TO WHAT EXTENT A WIKI SOLUTION WOULD ADDRESS THE REQUIREMENTS
Use your critical thinking skills to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a wiki solution to address the knowledge management requirements of the Fred Hollows Foundation.
This may include identifying any other KM technologies that could be used instead of or in conjunction with a wiki deployment to meet GSSC’s knowledge management needs.

DELIVERABLES
WEEK 8 TUTORIALS: ONE NOTE PRESENTATION
In the Week 8 tutorial, you will present for 5 minutes on how you are using OneNote for your research and analysis.
You will need to share your OneNote notes with your Tutor prior to the tutorial so that it can be displayed as needed.

Write and submit an up to 2,000 word report. It must include:
An Executive Summary Table of Contents
An Introduction indicating the objective, focus, structure and direction of the report A brief overview of organisational context and the knowledge management issues
Your proposed set of KM system requirements and user stories, clearly structured using Becerra‐Fernandez & Sabherwal’s KM process framework.
An evaluation of your requirements against wiki functionality.
The recommendations you would put to your manager about implementing a wiki solution In‐text citations and a reference list to the evidence base of your report using the APA style

Report formatting requirements – 12 point Times New Roman or equivalent, margins not less than 2 centimetres from all sides, single‐spaced.
The Q Manual from the Monash Business School has some great advice about report writing. See https://www.monash.edu/business/current‐students/study‐resources/qmanual.pdf
