FINAL MAGAZINE PROJECT (30%): Final Magazine Project Communications Due via e-mail or physical dropbox, April 6th, 2020 This final project provides a platform for exploring the relationships between your own experiences of popular culture texts through various media and the current scholarly literature (beginning with the research proposal) on your research topic. The project will begin with in-class group discussions on topics, observations, and possible text examples. Your final submission will consist of either a print or digital magazine that is comprised of an editorial, a feature article/essay (or 2-3 smaller articles) and images that present your research thesis in relation to theory found in the literature and the conventions of a popular magazine. Project description: You are required to select a particular social, economic, political or environmental issue and formulate a question or problem statement in relation to how we understand this issue through popular media presentations. Be particularly conscious of the media forms that frequently present this issue to the public as the subject for analysis. You will need to write a feature article (or 2-3 smaller articles) based on a specific argument you propose in relation to how the issues are presented in both popular media and the scholarly literature (peer-reviewed articles). You may use your imagination and also include popular literature, music, web sites, film, television, print media, advertising media and radio, both commercial and independent venues as media forms as well as the five required scholarly sources used for the research proposal. The point of this assignment is for you to immerse yourself in both your chosen issue and the ways in which that issue is presented through vehicles relative to popular culture and mass communication. You must also present these observations in relation to current scholarly literature on the particular issue you choose. The final presentation will be submitted as a print or digital magazine that uses research from the proposal together with your own creative production to create a communications text that is intended for a public audience. In class we examined the key elements of magazine covers. I’ve separated these elements into two lists: features you are REQUIRED to have on your cover and features that are OPTIONAL. You will have to decide what features ‘fit’ best on your cover based on the genre, audience, and price. For example, a tabloid magazine makes use of far more sub-images, puffs, and bubbles than an interior design magazine. Familiarize yourself with ‘real-life’ examples of magazines within your chosen genre to help you in the layout process. Required

Consider this an introduction to your topic and the article(s) to follow. A letter from the editor (i.e. from YOU) should contain the following:
Your priority is to write a persuasive, thoughtful, and critical ‘essay’ in journalistic form which explores your chosen issue from BOTH academic and popular perspectives. You will develop key sub-areas that highlight contradictions between scholarly/empirical work and popular representations of your topic. Use sub-headings. Write in first person (if you wish). This is a thesis-driven piece, which means you have to prove your argument through a critical examination of evidence. In class I will suggest some approaches to structuring your editorial essay. Once you are satisfied with the quality of your arguments and analysis, your next task is to determine the best form and layout for transforming your essay into one or several magazine articles. Depending on your topic, angle, and research, you may decide to structure your magazine as EITHER a feature story OR two to three smaller articles. Regardless, the total word count will not exceed 2000 words. You CANNOT ‘tack on’ leftover word count from your Letter (see above) to this section of the magazine. In class, we’ve discussed the key elements of a magazine article (listed below). Again, as with the cover layout, you will select and incorporate the features that best align with current standards for your magazine genre and market.
In class we also discussed editorial writing styles. This assignment does not require you to write in a formal, academic tone (especially if your magazine genre would clash with this tone). While I encourage you to abandon traditional academic essay style in favour of an editorial approach, be sure you maintain the quality and depth of your ideas.
On one of the final pages of your magazine (back cover or the inside final page), you will create two lists: a scholarly reference list AND a list of images you sourced for your magazine. Scholarly References:

SUBMISSION FORMAT AND DEADLINE The project is due on Monday, April 6th, 2020 by 3PM. You have the option to submit your magazine in either hard-copy or digital (soft) copy. DO NOT SUBMIT MULTIPLE COPIES. HARD COPY Submissions: Hard copies must be placed in the drop-box which will be located outside CC3010 from 9AM to 3PM. Final Magazine Project Communications SOFT COPY Submissions: Soft copies must be e-mailed in a Mac compatible format to: divya.maharajh@utoronto.ca by 3PM. In the subject of your e-mail, type: ‘CCT310 Magazine Project’. CC yourself to the e-mail so that you know the message sent correctly. Check well in advance of the due date that your file is small enough to attach to the e-mail (or, that you know how to compress it). I will not accept cloud-based multi user files or any digital submissions in the form of a URL. You must submit a ‘static’ copy of your magazine, attached as a file. Please ensure your magazine contains your name and student number (either at the bottom of your front cover OR on the ‘sign-off’ of your Letter from the Editor). Given the nature of this assignment, standard font and spacing requirements do not apply. We will review acceptable fonts, sizes and spacing for magazine content in class.
