You will write a 2-3 page paper about the mechanics of your chosen film. In your paper, you will respond to all of the following questions. INCLUDE THE NAME OF YOUR FILM IN THE TITLE OF YOUR PAPER. SINGLE or NORMAL spacing with a 12 point font. You can structure your paper by breaking it down into bullet points like the ones below, or you can write it in an essay format.
First, watch the film you’ve chosen. I would strongly advise taking detailed notes while watching to aid you in your writing.
STORYTELLING – Who is the main character? What exactly is their goal? What are their roadblocks? What three sentences would you use to tell me what’s going on if you had to break this movie down into three sections: beginning, middle, and end?
How does the film effectively employ the “Show, don’t tell” principle? What about the film’s storytelling and use of visual cues was particularly brilliant? Remember, this isn’t about acting; “show, don’t tell” is when the camera moves to show YOU, the audience, something significant. [For example, at the very end of Citizen Kane, the last image of the film, which is a close-up of the sled burning in the fire…and we finally see “Rosebud,” is a brilliant moment of “show, don’t tell.” There is no acting in this scene…all it’s about the camera.]
In this film, what two brilliant moments of acting did you notice? What do you mean by that? What do you believe made it so great? (Consider emotional openness, movements, gestures, and vocal inflection…) What techniques did the actor use to bring the character to life? What was it that made them credible? [Please discuss the voice acting AND how the animation of the characters helps to enhance the actors’ vocal performances if you chose one of the animated films from the list.]
How did they tell this story through CINEMATOGRAPHY? Choose three different shots from the shot list you learned last week and find moments in the movie where you can name the shot, composition, or other element that was used and why it was chosen. What difference did that choice make to the story?
What about the field of design? Design is divided into five categories:
Choose a character and consider what the costume design reveals about that character. Consider the color, the texture of the material, and any additional bling. Choose two outfits and explain why each one is appropriate for the character.
Props: Can you think of one item that an actor picked up and handled that revealed something about their character? What did they do with it?
What was the location of this film’s set? Do you believe it was shot on location or with a green screen? What makes you believe that? What did the set reveal about the world in which the characters exist? Choose a perfect setting – pay attention to a detail about the set that you’ve never seen before. What did it add to the story by noticing that?
What kind of music was used in this film? Consider the instrumentation you’re hearing. When the movie first started, how did it make you feel? Was there ever a moment of complete silence? What role did music play in telling the story? Describe a time when you heard music. What about the music selection in the movie? What made them pick that song? Is it music, lyrics, or both? So, how about the audio effects?
Consider the section on lighting and how crucial it is in filmmaking. How did you feel while watching it when there were moments of backlight, low light, deep color saturation, washed out colors…? Choose two scenes from the movie in which you understand why the lighting was chosen the way it was.
Overall Thoughts: What have you learned as a result of this investigation? What did you think of the movie? Would you see this movie again? Why do you think that is? Why should others go see this movie?
