Quote
“Faulknerian narrative techniques are also dear in the works of many other Arab novelists. To give only a few examples, the novels of the Syrian writer Hani Al-Raheb make substantial use of the stream-of-consciousness, interior monologue, concern with the past, use of poetic language and symbols, italicized words, and boldface type. Furthermore, he explicitly and definitively asserts that right from the beginning he was after a new style whose features are reflected in such writers as Dostoyevsky, Durrell, and Faulkner.[4] And in his best known novel A Thousand and Two Nights” (Tawfiq 3 P1).
Mahfoz….experiments with narrative devices or techniques of Joyce and Faulkner
In Mirimar 1967…he experiments with Faulkner’s technique:
Multiply points of view
Concentration on memory and the past
Centering the events on a female figure
Stream-of-consciousness
Interior monologue
Presumes that Mahfoz read Sound and Fury because of it’s reception in the Arab world (Tawfiq 3 P4)
This indicates how the faulknerian style influenced Arab narratives and many were influenced by Faulkner’s unique technique of ____________________
Tawfiq points out that there are many similarities
Multiple points of view
Faulkner –four sections, 3 by 3 narrators, and the 4th by omniscient narrator
Mahfoz –five sections, 4 narrators for 4 sections and last section is 1st one again
Both narrator’s tell their same story from their own perspective
Last chapter is the most objective view of the story (Tawfiq 3, P5)
Faulkner’s last chapter from Dilsey’s point of view, she is honest and fair minded, and clarifies the vague points
Mahfoz brings the most balanced and trustworthy narrator back to the story
One character in each novel has the freedom to use stream-of-consciousness and feelings
Amer Wadji …lives in his past memories
Benjy cannot control his thoughts and words
Language
Faulkner language and punctuation reflect the freedom
Tawfiq characters speak in a conventional language and conventional structure and punctuation (Tawfiq 4 -P 2 &3)
