Family Violence Scrapbook and Report
Description
Purpose: This assignment encourages you to examine how family violence victims, survivors, and perpetrators are portrayed in your local media; and to reflect upon how criminal justice and professional responses may be influenced by this. Beginning with the first week of class, student-colleagues will compile a digital scrapbook over a three-week time period. Include three to five news articles each week of current events from your local newspapers, newsletters, and news magazines (Therefore, you should have a minimum of 9 articles; include headings with the dates of the week each set covers).
Include detailed, numbered comments for at least 9 of the articles, per the below instructions. Articles can refer to a wide variety of issues relating to different types of family violence and violence between intimates. Select your articles from different sources and construct the scrapbook in a creative and professional manner. For example, you may include pictures, comics, and advertisements that suggest both traditional and nontraditional gender roles. If you are having trouble finding articles, check your search terms. Are you searching for child abuse, elder abuse, murder-suicide, and other terms which will produce relevant articles? Be creative.
Also, you can include positive events, like fundraisers for shelters, or Take Back the Night events for sexual assault. Content of the Comments: Provide a written comment next to at least three (3) clippings or articles each week (Therefore, you should have a minimum of 12 written comments). Each comment should include: 1. Source and date of article 2. The societal or individual values depicted 3. Your thoughts and reactions to, and feelings about the article 4. An analysis of how the article relates to course material or readings, with proper citation to the sources (include a page number if the text book), and references.
5. A self-assessment of your capacity to intervene (via prevention, education, advocacy, or treatment) as a social worker in the situation described in the article; this is about YOUR personal individual capacity, not the general capacity of a social worker. Social Work 7801: Family Violence Page 9 Failure to include a response to each of the items above will result in deducted points. You should number your comment responses to communicate which question you are answering in the comment to ensure the reader can easily verify compliance with all of the requirements.
After you have completed your scrapbook, develop a two-to-four (2-4) page report (excluding title and reference pages) that clearly summarizes the following information. Use headings to organize your paper, and include an introduction, relate the articles to the course materials, discuss application of the course materials, concepts and theories to the article content and to your capacity to respond, and close the paper with a cohesive conclusion.
1. Report the total number of clippings
2. Report the total number of comments
3. Describe the different types of family violence covered by your local media
4. Describe how your local community perceives different types of family violence victims and perpetrators, based on media coverage. Relate the course readings to your scrapbook articles and comments, with specific examples cited properly to multiple citations within the course materials (including the page number if citing the textbook)
6. Based on your comments, provide a more detailed analysis of your self-assessment of your capacity to intervene in the different situations depicted in scrapbook articles and what you might do to increase your capacity to intervene.
7. Describe the overall usefulness of this exercise in increasing your awareness of how family violence is portrayed in your local media and how it affects your work as a social worker in this area
