Description |
The goal of this paper is for you to examine a specific, on-the-ground occurrence or process in the Greater Toronto Area that is relevant to hyper diversity, unfairness, social identity, and/or public space issues.
Of begin, read the introduction to Jay Pitter and John Lorinc’s book Subdivided: City-Building in an Age of Hyper-Diversity (2016). The University of Toronto Library has this book available online. After that, pick one of the core chapters that interests you. With case studies from the Greater Toronto Area, each chapter tackles a different issue related to social geographies.
The following are some of the topics that connect with hyper diversity, unfairness, social identity, and conflicts over public space:
Policing of Mental Health
Housing for the Poor
gentrification of public transportation
Racism and Religious Communities
Settlement of Immigrants
Education
Consider which themes you’d like to learn more about as you read the chapter. This will be the central theme of your research paper. Conduct additional study on both the general societal concerns discussed and their specific contemporary consequences in the Greater Toronto Area after reading a chapter. It is strongly advised that you locate, read, and quote non-academic news sources to back up any statements or observations you make (3 – 5 news articles is appropriate, the book chapter can also be included).
In order to study your chosen topic, you must also identify, read, and cite two scholarly sources. You must use at least one additional academic reading, one of which may be from the course readings.
You may utilize a personal writing style, such as first person narrative (i.e. “I”), where appropriate, but please keep your paper in a formal academic tone overall. Your assignment must be double-spaced with 1-inch margins and typed in 12-point font. When you go over the word limit by a lot, you’ll lose a lot of points. Your name, student number, course title and number, and assignment title should all appear on the first page of your assignment. Direct quotations and figures must be immediately followed by an in-text source reference, and paragraphs containing ideas from other sources should have the citation at the end of the appropriate phrase or paragraph.
