With the “West” still reeling from the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution, we turn our attention to postwar Western Europe, where fascism began to take root in a number of countries. While we will concentrate on Italy and Germany, which experienced wholesale fascist takeovers, it is important to remember that fascist movements existed in more than 20 European countries during the 1920s.
But, what exactly is fascism? That is an excellent question. According to the dictionary, fascism is a type of far-right authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strict social and economic regimentation. What did fascism look like in Europe in the early twentieth century? It was all of the above in both Italy and Germany, as well as a reaction to the perceived failure of liberalism (WWII) and the rise of communism. The masses in both Italy and Germany idolized their respective leaders, Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler.
While we will briefly discuss Italy, the main focus here is on Germany, where ultra-nationalism was commonplace and the humiliation of the Versailles Treaty was beginning to sink in, particularly among the middle class. Adolph Hitler was able to gain total control of Germany over a ten-year period, ostensibly through democratic means, and win the hearts and minds of the majority of the population. In the process, Hitler inflamed long-standing German prejudices against Jews, who had lived in Germany for generations, as well as outsiders such as Slavs, homosexuals, and gypsies. He created a highly effective propaganda machine that persuaded Germans that they were in the right, and he was able to pull Germany out of the Great Depression through infrastructure development and rapid militarization before moving on to conquering other countries.
With the tacit approval of the rest of “The West,” he was able to march his armies into the Rhineland, assist fellow fascist leader Franco in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, and march into Austria and Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland. That wasn’t the case at all. In September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the east after signing a non-aggression pact with Stalin of the USSR, and Stalin invaded Poland from the west shortly after. Germany’s Blitzkrieg (lightning war) was on, and the other major Western powers woke up. On September 3, 1940, England and France, both allies of Poland, declared war on Germany, sparking World War II.
I’m sure you all know much of this story. The Soviet Union quickly became disenchanted with Germany when Hitler invaded The Soviet Union. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States, allied with France and Britain, and eventually the Soviet Union, entered the war and began fighting on two fronts: Europe and the Pacific. The war lasted until 1945, with sides drawn: the Allied Powers (Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union) vs. the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan). It is regarded as the most destructive war in history, with estimates of the number of dead as high as 50 million (including 25 million from the Soviet Union alone). Much of Europe was destroyed, and the war with Japan came to an end soon after when the US dropped two atomic bombs on Tokyo.
We’ll look at an excerpt from Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” for this week’s primary document analysis. I’ve also included a link to Kanopy where you can watch the films Fuhrer Cult and Megalomania (if you don’t already have an account). Later this week, I’ll post the final essay questions. They must be submitted by midnight on Saturday, June 12th.
The First Part:
Prior to World War II, Adolph Hitler was able to achieve some of his foreign policy goals in part due to the “appeasement” policies of other Western democracies. The Munich Pact, which gave Germany the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia), is the best example of appeasement. What was the rationale behind appeasement, and why did it backfire in the end? What were Hitler’s foreign policy goals, and which of them was he able to achieve even before World War II began? Do you think there was any way Hitler could have been stopped before World War II? It must be at least 250 words long.
The Second Part:
Adolph Hitler discusses the “art of propaganda” in Mein Kampf (My Struggle). While propagandizing the German population, describing foreign policy objectives, and propagating Nazi racial theories, he and his Third Reich used this “art” quite effectively. What are the requirements for effective propaganda, according to Hitler, and how does he view the general public? What did he learn from Britain and the United States in World War I? Finally, where do you see propaganda being used effectively today, and how do you see it being done? It must be at least 250 words long.
