Please write a proposal for an essay on how you plan to interpret this media object using the frameworks we learned about in class.
For more information, see “FMS 110 Essay Proposal Assignment” for the proposal and “FMS 110 Final Essay Assignment Sheet” for the final essay.
FINAL ESSAYS (no need to write them now):
1. Choose one piece of media that we haven’t talked about in class. A film, a TV show, a video game, an internet sensation, a music video, or any other form of media can be considered. Choose something that piques your interest; this will help you stay energized and curious as you write.
2, In addition to choosing a media object, choose three different theoretical frameworks that we have learned about (from ALL attached files from this class). A theoretical framework is a way of thinking about a piece of media that encourages us to concentrate on different aspects of it or to interpret it differently. Our class is structured around a different framework each week, so you can choose between three weekly course topics or three individual readings from our course as your frameworks.
PROPOSAL (on the basis of the final essay):
An abstract and an outline for your final paper are included in this proposal. The assignment is meant to help you prepare for your final essay and get feedback before you start writing. Please see the information sheet here for more information about the final paper.
THESE ARE THE TWO ELEMENTS OF YOUR PROPOSAL:
The abstract should be a one-paragraph (200-300 word) overview of the topics you’ll cover in your paper. You should state which media object you will be analyzing, what theoretical lenses you will use to analyze it, and what main points you expect to make through your analysis in your abstract. The OUTLINE should be a breakdown of the essay you will write, paragraph by paragraph. Make a one-sentence topic sentence for each paragraph. A topic sentence is a complete sentence that summarizes the paragraph’s topic and/or point. When creating your outline, keep in mind that your paper should be presented in a logical manner with a strong emphasis on detailed analysis.
SUGGESTED ESSAY STRUCTURE (ONLY FOR FINAL WRITING, NOT FOR PROPOSAL):
-Introduction – A synopsis of the paper’s main points
-Can you tell me what media object you’re looking at? – a brief explanation
-Framework #1- present the first framework as well as your media object analysis through it (2 – 3paragraphs)
-Framework #2- present the second framework as well as your media object analysis through it (2 -3 paragraphs)
-Framework #3- present the third framework as well as your media object analysis through it (2 – 3paragraphs)
-Conclusion – Remind readers of key concepts and explain why this analysis is important.
