Within your bodies, numerous reactions are taking place at any given time; whether it is the digestion of food, the conversion of cortisone into cortisol, or creating sugar, a reaction occurs. Many of the reactions your body needs for survival need a catalyst to help get it going. This catalyst is an enzyme. Enzymes are complex proteins that are necessary for your body to function. For example, in digestion, the enzymes help to breakdown the protein, carbohydrates, and fats into smaller components. Each enzyme in the human body has a specific job and only does that job.
There are six classes of enzymes:
- Oxidoreductases
- Transferases
- Hydrolases
- Lyases
- Isomerases
- Ligases or synthetases
For this Assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation on enzymes and their functions. Below, you will find an outline of the slides you should include in your presentation. Please note, your presentation should have at least 14 (but no more than 20) slides. The information presented on the slides should be brief and bulleted following best practices for presentations. However, in the notes section below each slide, you will add your detailed talking points for each slide as though you were presenting the material before an actual audience:
Slide 1: Introduction
Introduce the mechanism or action of enzymes.
Slides 2–10 (approx.): Guided Research
Research enzymes and then compose a series of slides that addresses the following questions:
- What does each of the six classes of enzymes do? (You may use more than one slide here.)
- Discuss factors that can modify enzyme structure.
- Discuss factors that can modify enzyme functions.
- Discuss the chemical composition and configuration of enzymes.
- Why is it important for the human body to maintain a certain pH level and temperature?
- Knowing that enzymes are biological catalysts, discuss the following:
- How chemical structure of an enzyme is related to its specificity and catalytic activity.

- Enzymes are seen to be complex structures. Do you think scientists can replicate the complex folding the enzyme has and if so, how might they do this?
Slides 12–13 (approx.): Conclusion
- Wrap up your presentation with a brief statement.
