Our eating habits have a big impact on our carbon footprint. Meat accounts for 13.5 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions, according to this NY Times infographic (Links to an external site.) (also listed as an optional webpage for the week). The chemicals necessary to cultivate food for the animals to consume, the processing of the animals, and the transportation of the animals all require energy. Furthermore, some animals, such as cows, emit additional methane emissions as a result of their digestion (“cow burps”).
Malnourished persons are protein deficient in addition to being calorie or vitamin poor everywhere over the world. Finding, growing, and raising protein, particularly in the form of animal meat, is both economically and environmentally costly. As a result, protein is frequently scarce, leaving many individuals without a reliable source. Because of political and economic factors, many people who are protein deficient do not acquire enough food: enough food is produced, but imbalances in distribution and income impede equal access.
The majority of our protein in the United States comes from bird and mammal flesh. Unfortunately, producing these meats consumes a lot of land, water, and fossil fuels. The amount of methane released if everyone in the world ate as much mammalian protein as Americans would be huge. There are other options available (both for Americans and for the rest of the world).
I want you to study and debate solutions to protein insufficiency around the world for your homework assignment. Keep in mind that the world’s population will most certainly reach 9-10 billion people throughout your lifetime, and that everyone should consume 40 grams or more of protein every day. What do you believe should be done to ensure that everyone gets adequate protein?
I’ve included some links to information regarding a few recent concepts below. I’d like you to write TWO paragraphs assessing one of these options’ global viability. Include the solution’s social, economic, and environmental components, as well as its benefits and potential pitfalls. If you have a different solution in mind, feel free to write about it instead.
