Research Paper Assignment: Write a 6+ page literary analysis of your interpretation of
the author’s purpose in the primary source that you are analyzing: “Sonny’s Blues” The works cited page should be placed on the top of the last page of the paper, page 7 or more and will include the short story and three or more journal articles as well as any of the websites posted in Module Four. Consider narrowing the focus of your paper to an issue that you want to investigate to determine its suggestions about the resolution of the conflict or one of the elements of fiction such as the setting, characters, major conflict, point of view, or symbols. Then, state your claim or argument about the author’s intent. Your argumentative claim should state your interpretation of the author’s purpose and the element of fiction or thematic issue that most effectively develops your claim. You must cite passages from your primary source in paragraphs III-VI as well as the expert analysis of three or more secondary sources. The concession and refutation, paragraphs VII and VIII will include a quote from a particular secondary source that you have selected to recognize and refute . Your final essay will include a total of 6 or more secondary source quotes as well as 4-8 quotes from the primary source (4 subtopics, concession, and refutation). Secondary sources must be journal articles that are posted in Module Four. Include three or more of the secondary sources I have posted online in your working bibliography cards.
You must use the first two sources posted for your short story: Clayborn and Sherard for “Sonny’s Blues”. Then, you may select any additional sources that you would like from those posted in Module Four. You should create 5 notes from three of the sources provided for your story and include three or more of them in your final essay.
“Sonny’s Blues” Topic Suggestions:
- In “Sonny’s Blues” discuss how the various shifts in the setting and the flashbacks contribute to the social forces of isolation, poverty, and racial tension? How do the subway scene, the algebra classroom, the childhood Sunday afternoons, the streets of Harlem and the old neighborhood, the road and night of his uncle’s death, the narrator’s kitchen, and finally the night club, bandstand, piano and indigo light, reinforce or counteract these social forces? Select four scenes to develop your essay.

In “Sonny’s Blues,” Sonny overcomes his position in society as an outsider and transforms into a conduit for personal development through his reconnection with his brother, his pursuit of his musical passion, his involvement with the community through his performance, and his representation of the significance of the artist in black culture. Or
The narrator of “Sonny’s Blues,” Sonny’s older brother, portrays the more socially stable character until the death of his daughter Grace when his commitment to his family and his personal development is initiated through his reconnection with Sonny, his renewal of his commitment to his mother’s last wish, his willingness to attend Sonny’s performance, and his immersion in self-reflection through listening to Sonny’s music.
Include as many in-depth secondary sources in your final research paper as possible (at least 3 secondary sources posted in Canvas are required). All secondary sources must be scholarly journal articles that include works cited entries.
Remember that the “Sonny’s Blues” papers must cite both Clayborn and Sherard .
