Subject: World literature
Topic: Legendary Kamapuaʻa
Paper details:
In this final essay option, you must write a literary analysis paper supported by academic research (using academic search engines to identify literary and other theoretical articles to help you make your argument).
You are free to decide what you want to write for this paper, understanding that a research paper usually begins with a research question that you research then helps you to answer (this is the argument/thesis your paper will be making).
For example, you could ask the following kinds of research questions: How does world-building (or indigenous futurism) in Solomon Enosʻ Polyfantastica (or any other of the speculative fiction texts we read) support imagining indigenous sovereignty? What possibilities are there for indigenous writers like Kneubuhl in the genre of murder mystery?
How does Kneubuhl’s “Hoʻoulu Lāhui” allow us to critically examine indigenous nationalism? What is the potential of moʻolelo (or traditional storytelling) for contemporary decolonial movements (using any of the many texts we have read that use moʻolelo)?
Once you have settled on a research question, you will determine your research terms and use them in academic search engines (see Laulima weekly content for more information).
Your answer to the research question will be your thesis, supported both by your research and your literary analysis of the text/s you have chosen to write about. Again, remember that this is a short paper so please limit the texts you analyze (I would choose 1 novel or 1-2 short stories).
You must use examples/literary analysis from the texts to back up your argument. You must use at least 2 literary essays (academic texts) You may use 1 or more other vetted texts (historical, socioeconomic, anthropological, etc.) You must use MLA formatting for in-text and end of text/bibliographic citations.
