ENG 112 Paper #1: Precis/Summary
After reading our articles “Hidden Intellectualism” and “Blue Collar Brilliance,” please select ONE argument and compose a two page precis with TSIS-styled response (summary (80%) & response (20%). Direct textual evidence should not be used in Paper #1.
Topic: Using theory presented in TSIS, please write a “They say/I say” summarization of one article selected from the options above, along with a personal response. Roughly, your summary should be 80% of the paper, and your response should be 20%.
Writer: You are the writer of this paper, and there are a few guidelines I challenge you to follow. This is not to say these are the “right” ways to write, but they are the specifications I am assessing in this particular assignment. First, do not write the summary portion of your paper in the first person (i.e.- I, me, my…). This is about what “they say.” Yet, the second section, the “I Say” response section, can be written from the first person.
Because this is a brief writing, you should do your best to compose a brief, reflective piece that accurately demonstrates your writing skills.
Audience: Assume your audience has not read the article you selected, but is looking for the writer’s main ideas AND movements in this article (What does the article say/thesis? How does the article present this information? Publication information? Sources? Audience? Purpose?)
Purpose: Practice “they say” writing, non-biased summations, and academic writing in ENG 112. Moreover, practice integrating “I say” off of a “they say” piece; there is a pre-existing conversation, and you are working with entering that conversation with your thoughtful continuation of this argument with your response.
Occasion: This final draft of this paper is due Monday, September 28th, 2020 in Drive by 4:44pm. This paper should be two pages, no shorter (roughly 500 words).
Mechanics: Your paper should follow MLA specifications, most importantly: 10-12pt font; double-spaced; 1”margins; you name, my name, our class information, and the date at the top left corner; no spacing between paragraphs; a title; last name and page numbers in the top right corner of each page; and a Work Cited page. Remember, your paper should not include the word “I” in the summary section. I will not pass papers under two full pages; best to head onto the third page.
