Purpose
Now that you have completed your full sentence outline and have received feedback on that outline, you will write the first draft of your Argument Research Essay on fracking or offshore drilling. Writing a fully developed essay that incorporates research and clear organization prepares you to write successful college essays. Your essay must follow MLA formatting rules. For a review of MLA formatting, integration of sources, and MLA documentation, return to the videos for MLA Basics in Student Resources in the main menu. You will need submit your first draft essay here. This submission link will use Turnitin, a plagiarism-detection tool, to check your essay against a database of other works. Analyzing the Turnitin report will help you ensure that your research is properly integrated into your writing and properly cited.
Directions
- Thoroughly read the feedback you received for your essay outline.
- Revise your outline as needed. (Note: You do not need to resubmit the outline. Revising your outline will help you write your essay.)
- Develop an effective 3-4 page Argument Research Essay on fracking or offshore drilling using your revised outline.
- Include a strong introduction (Links to an external site.) for your essay as well as a strong conclusion (Links to an external site.).
- Make sure your essay is in MLA format (Links to an external site.) and uses proper in-text citations (Links to an external site.)
- Include proper source citations listed in a separate Works Cited (Links to an external site.) after the 3-4 pages of text.
- Submit the first draft of your Argument Research Essay as a file upload.
- Come back to the link and check for the Turnitin report. (You may need to wait about 20-30 minutes for the report.)
- Review the Turnitin report and focus on the highlighted parts. Consider these points as you review the report.
- Is the highlighted part a direct quote? Did I use quotation marks?
- Is the highlighted part my own wording of borrowed information? Did I paraphrase enough so that it sounds like me? (If the highlighted part is more than 90% match, you should work on paraphrasing and ensure that the source idea has proper in text citations.)
- Citations in the works cited may be highlighted. Don’t worry about that.
- Use the Turnitin report to revise your essay.

You will receive 10 points for submitting your essay here and consulting the Turnitin feedback. The Turnitin feedback will be valuable, as it will guide you in your final revision efforts. Revising your draft is essential to the successful completion of the final draft of your Argument Research Essay.

Elements of the required response may also be lacking. 40 points out of 50: The essay illustrates solid understanding of the relevant material by correctly addressing most of the relevant content; identifying and explaining most of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology; explaining the reasoning behind most of the key points/claims; and/or where necessary or useful, substantiating some points with accurate examples. The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. The Student fails to provide an adequate synthesis of research collected for the paper. 10 out 20 points: References to scholarly sources are occasionally given; many statements seem unsubstantiated. Frequent errors in APA 6th Edition format, leaving the reader confused about the source of the information. There are significant errors of the formation in the references and citations. And/or there is a significant use of highly questionable sources. 15 out 20 points: Credible Scholarly sources are used effectively support claims and are, for the most part, clear and fairly represented. Structure of the Paper (worth 10% of total points) Zero points: Student failed to submit the final paper. 3 points out of 10: Student needs to develop better formatting skills.
