Writing Response: Odyssey 1, 5, & 9
1.Choose one passage of 1-3 continuous lines from Odyssey books 1, 5, or 9 and quote it.
2.Explain its meaning in context: how does the beginning differ from Theogony & what could this signify OR how are gender and gender dynamics represented and portrayed in the reading? You can also use your notes from class to help with your response, but I want to see your thoughts come through, not just what was included in lecture.
3.Raise 1-3 questions specifically related to this reading for discussion (this can be a question(s) related to your quote, the reading as a whole, something you were confused about, something that stood out to you, etc.).
Your response [your #2] must be a minimum of 200 words (this does not include your main quote, any added quotes, or your questions) and no more than 600 words. Please cite any quotes or paraphrasing you incorporate into your response, using MLA or APA citation style. Your response must be sent to me in a Google or Word doc (I will accept PDFs if necessary) via email or through Canvas messaging at ll:59 p.m. the day before your section.
This is an example of you preliminarily engaging with the reading. It benefits your class engagement and gives you another chance to think things through. It will then improve your papers because you will have practiced organizing your ideas and creating a response.
I will take note of questions people ask and themes they are interested in and try to bring them up in class. That way, the course will more closely address your concerns.

How do you see gender relations in this book and throughout the Odyssey?
What values do you see behind Odysseus’ desire to return home?

The way Odysseus narrates–his difference from the narrator of the Odyssey itself.
How does each society he encounters differ, in what ways do they fail?
Think especially of “nature vs. culture”: How is hospitality or its lack at issue in each?
Keep an eye out for themes you’re familiar with: Respect for the gods, the values of goods, of action, of return home.
