Dualism of Human Nature and Its Social Conditions
Durkheim’s 1914 essay, “The Dualism of Human Nature and Its Social Conditions” (pp. 149-163; 236-237 in Bellah’s edited volume, Emile Durkheim on Morality and Society; also available online for free, if you don’t own the book:
https://www.berghahnjournals.com/view/journals/durkheimian-studies/11/1/ds110105.xml .
Read what Bellah says about the essay in his introduction, as I explained today, and then study the essay itself. Then answer this question: “Is Durkheim’s understanding of the alleged duality in human character a useful way of looking at today’s world? Explain briefly what he thinks, and then give an example or two of how it works or does not work today.”
