Liberty University
Drug and Alcohol abuse negatively affect many people and the outcome of the addition have devastating impact on the individuals, society, and love ones which makes it a powerful topic to discuss. Its very important to shine more light on the after effects of the abuse, which the user experience. People seems to use drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with the pain of life.
This is one of the reasons, I want to be a Counselor, so I can help with getting information out to people, so they can make better choices in life.
I grew up in Chicago, Illinois, on the Westside of Chicago in a mostly all African American area. Over the years growing up, I have personally witnessed families being torn apart by drugs and alcohol. My first encounter was at a young age of 9-10, when I would see family members come to family gatherings intoxicated because they drunk too much alcohol. Because of their drunkenness, things would get out of hand eventually led to a fight or someone being forced to leave our home for being out of control. My next encounter would be with drugs, occurred when I was a teenager when I would go outside and chill with my friends and we would come across people who had been using drugs. The use of the drug was taking those individuals we saw, down the wrong road quick because some of them would break into people houses to steal things and hurt people to get drugs. Also, I could remember when I was younger there was a big “just say no” to drug campaign at school and my parents was always very vocal in letting me know that drugs were terrible. However, it seems like some people didn’t get the same message or take heed to it. Therefore, as I became older, the need to help people in my neighborhood make a change for the better grew stronger and became one of my goals.
