It’s vital to understand your product (i.e., your talents, traits, personality, core values, etc.) and to establish and comprehend your target audiences, as outlined in the PDF reading “Matching the Product with the Audience When Marketing Yourself” (i.e., potential employers, colleagues, customers, career gatekeepers, etc.).
For this project, you’ll identify your prospective target audiences, determine what those consumers want, and then plan how you’ll match your product to those desires. Do the following using a paragraph, outline, or table format:
Make a list of current audiences. List at least eight different audiences to which you now promote yourself on a daily, monthly, or other regular basis. Potential employers, present employers, friends, family, teachers, various society segments, social groupings, clients, colleagues, employees, store personnel, vendors/suppliers, social media audiences, and so on are examples of these people. Remember that these audiences could be in person, online, on the phone, etc. Be really explicit about who this audience is for each audience. Instead of saying “store employees,” try “early morning employees at the Starbucks where I go every daily.” When you may say “my coworkers Cristina, Derek, and Victoria who work in the cubicles next to mine,” don’t just say “my coworkers.”
Current Audiences’ Importance Provide some insight into why each of the 8+ existing audiences is significant to you in your marketing efforts for each of the 8+ current audiences. What is the benefit of impressing each audience?
What Your Current Audiences Expect of You Finally, put down at least three characteristics (features, attributes, talents, traits, values, etc.) that each of the 8+ existing audiences you identified would want in a person like you. Although there may be some similarities in the attributes or characteristics desired by the audiences you specified, each audience will most likely want something different.
Make a list of potential audiences. Add at least three new “prospective” target audiences to whom you’d like to promote yourself in the near or distant future. They could be possible employees in a specific industry, friends, social groups, clients, fans, and readers, among other things. While it’s important to be particular about the industry, the types of individuals you’re targeting, and so on, you don’t have to be as specific as you were in Step 1 because you may not yet know the specifics of these groups.
Prospective audiences are crucial. Provide some thoughts as to why each of the 3+ prospective audiences would be significant to you in your future marketing yourself efforts, much as you did in Step 2 with your current audiences. What is the benefit of impressing each audience?
What Do Potential Audiences Expect From You? Write down at least three characteristics (features, attributes, abilities, traits, values, etc.) that they would like in a person like you for each of the 3+ prospective target audiences. Because you may not be familiar with these audiences, you may overestimate this part compared to the others. However, think about what features are crucial to each audience.
Matching the right product to the right audience. Now think about how well your Product You matches the required characteristics of the (at least 8) current consumers and (at least 3) prospective audiences you listed. Discuss both the matches and the discrepancies (cases when you don’t match).
You are altering the product. Discuss what you can do to improve the fit between your various target audiences and the product (a set of attributes, traits, or other characteristics) you’re selling. How can you improve your Product You and Personal/Professional Brand in order to better market yourself to these different audiences? This section contains a list of suggestions for self-improvement.
