Description/Paper Instructions
Discussion on Tsunamis as a Geological Phenomenon
Introduction: For your final term paper in this class, you will investigate another significant geologic event. With the following exceptions, this assignment will be very similar to the first Geology in the News Assignment that you performed at the beginning of the semester:
It could be a geologic event that happened at any point in time throughout human history (so, the 1906 earthquake, 79 C.E. eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, etc.)
Your paper will be longer, with three to four pages (750-1000 words) double-spaced, 12-point font, and one-inch margins. A concise introduction and conclusion, as well as body paragraphs with headings, should all be included. Include a title page in your document.
You will explain all significant features of the event, such as the geologic/tectonic environment, the event itself, dangers, damage, what was learned, and so on (of course, this will depend on the topic you chose, so what you write about will be driven by what the research reveals).
You’ll need at least five sources. They won’t be news pieces, but they can still be internet sources if they’re trustworthy. Peer-reviewed Journal Articles are fantastic if you can comprehend them and offer the information in your own terms.
The goal of this project is to look into real-world geologic processes and how they affect people and society. The secondary goal is to get you comfortable with scientific writing and the APA style.
Choosing a subject:
For this assignment, you will investigate a geologic process that we have studied or will address in class, such as an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, a mudflow/landslide, the effects of climate change, the formation of a geologic wonder such as Yosemite, or any other topic that interests you. It only has to be related to geology and have an impact/importance on humans/society.
Additional Instructions:
The topic you chose should have an impact, meaning that it has had a major impact on people’s lives or has contributed to a broader understanding. (A magnitude 3 earthquake in Los Angeles that caused minimal damage and was scarcely felt isn’t a suitable topic.) An earthquake of greater magnitude that caused landslides in Northern India, affecting hundreds, would be a significant topic.)
Make your points in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner. Your summary should be succinct but informative, proving that you know what you’re talking about. Divide your paper into paragraphs, each with a distinct goal. Your introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs will all have APA-style headings.
Write in a scientific manner. You’re reporting facts and information from your sources in your own words. Do not use the words “I investigated…” or “You will learn…” to refer to yourself or “you.” Redundancy should be avoided and writing should be clear and simple.
Direct quotes should be kept to a minimum. It is frequently, if not always, possible to put the knowledge you are imparting into your own words in scientific writing, so please do so. Excessive/misuse of quotes will result in a deduction of points. You still use APA-style in-text citations to reference the content you’re presenting (see below).
***The assignment requires a minimum of 5 different sources. 5 various media sources, journal articles, or credible websites that describe the geologic environment are rather straightforward (no Wikipedia). In-text APA citations will be used, and references will be listed at the end. If you’re not familiar with APA style, click one of the links below to learn more (or do a search on your own).
***You must include a reference page as well as in-text citations in your article. If you don’t include them, the work will be regarded as plagiarized because you aren’t citing your sources.
