Only respond to ONE of the questions.
1. Racial Polarization (1966-1970): According to our assigned reading this week, America’s Civil Rights movement fragmented after 1965, and a militant “black power” movement arose in 1966-1970 across the country. A) Conduct research to define the term “black power” (using our textbook and at least one additional academic source). B) How did the black power movement differ from Rev. King’s nonviolent and accommodationist strategy (blacks working alongside Whites and other Americans)? C) What were the Black Panthers and how did they become famous? Finally, explain why the Great Society legislation failed to address at least two “sources” underlying massive “race riots” that swept through America’s major cities between 1965 and 1968 (including Watts/LA, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City).
2. At Home, JFK’s “New Frontier”: JFK is regarded as one of America’s “greatest presidents” by many (certainly he was one of the most admired for his good looks and style; and much counterfactual legend was published after his tragic assassination). As historians, we must acknowledge, however, that his domestic achievements were abysmal. A) Look into JFK’s domestic agenda, and start by focusing on one positive achievement (in terms of legislation or changes to federal programs). B-D) Next, discuss Patterson’s three explanations for JFK’s failure to promote a domestic “New Frontier” agenda. E) Which factor(s) should we attribute as the most significant in terms of understanding JFK’s domestic shortfalls, based on your reading (supported by supplemental research)?
3. JFK and the Cold War: As Patterson (p. 465) points out, JFK frequently argued that foreign policy is “the only important issue” that a president must deal with. However, according to our text, JFK “escalate[d] tensions with the Soviet Union” during the Cold War (487). A-E) Conduct research (using at least one supplementary source) to explain at least three “external forces” and two “personal” reasons why Cold-War tensions heightened (to the highest levels of the Cold War) during JFK’s presidency. List at least two decisions/actions by Premier Nikita Khrushchev that contributed to record Cold-War tensions during these years in JFK’s defense (20 Jan 1961- 22 Nov 1963).
4. American Liberalism in the 1960s: Patterson claims that “liberalism” (as a political ideology) peaked in the United States during the administrations of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson (Jan 1961-Jan 1969). A-C) Consider the following three legislative initiatives as “case studies” for defining liberalism in the 1960s: first, the tax-cut bill (“Revenue Act”: sponsored by JFK, signed by LBJ on January 26, 1964); second, the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 (signed on July 2, 1964); and third, LBJ’s “war on poverty” bill (signed on July 2, 1964). (“Economic Opportunity Act”: signed 20 Aug 1964). D) Define the major tenets of American “liberalism” under JFK and LBJ based on our text (and supplemented by at least one academic source). E-F) As part of your research, look into at least two ways in which the liberal ideals promoted by these three legislative initiatives went beyond conservative ideals, but fell short of activists’ goals.
5. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society”: Patterson documents the Johnson administration’s skillful legislative achievements, particularly in 1964 and 1965highlighted by the passage of what President Lyndon B. Johnson dubbed his “Big Four” initiatives. To A) outline the major provisions of all four of these legislative initiatives
, conduct research (using our textbook and at least one supplemental academic source). Also, as part of your discussion of each piece of legislation, consider the following: B) document at least one positive result/outcome attributable to each of these legislative actions; and C) document at least one negative result or unintended consequence attributable to each of these legislative actions. In a final paragraph, I’ll say: D) define what Patterson and/or other scholars refer to as President Johnson’s “legacy” of Great-Society Legislation (in general). E) Fill in the blanks with your own characterizations.
