Prompt for Ugetsu: After World War II, Japan did a lot of self-examination about how the war came about, and how it was partly caused by national greed and pride. After Japan’s horrific suffering and devastation, many people were determined to ensure that the same mistakes were never made again. In that light, consider Ugetsu. 1) How can Ugetsu be interpreted as a warning against greed and pride? Consider these traits in the context of the entire story, not just the two main characters. (How about Lady Wakasa, the ghost?) 2) How does it address men’s actions/behavior in comparison to women’s, as well as the impact of war on women? 3) Pick a scene that appealed to you visually. Describe it in terms of how it appears rather than what happens.
Ugetsu’s Backstory: Ugetsu, like The Seventh Seal, uses a distant past time to comment on timeless human truths. The film is set during a civil war in Japan and is based on a Japanese fable from a 1776 book. Consider that the film was made in 1953, only 8 years after Japan had lost WWII in a spectacular, atomic-level defeat. In fact, Japan was still occupied by US military command until just a year before Ugetsu was filmed. In 1953, however, Japan was well on its way to economic prosperity, thanks in part to aid from the United States and its allies in rebuilding the country. Nonetheless, the war in Ugetsu can be interpreted as a reaction to Japan’s recent military involvement as well as a reflection on societal values. After watching it several times, I’ve concluded that the film also contains commentary on Japan’s 1950s economic boom. What are your thoughts?
A unique aspect of the film’s production is that approximately 70% of the footage was shot with a camera crane. This meant that the camera was almost constantly moving and shifting up, down, and sideways, even if only a small amount. See if you can spot the busy camera and how it adds a sense of unpredictability to some scenes, particularly in the Lady’s home. Also, don’t be alarmed by the presence of some female brows in this film. In medieval Japan, shaved and then smudged-on eyebrows were part of a theatrical style. The first time I saw this, I couldn’t take my gaze away from the brows! This film, like The Seventh Seal, is slow-paced and shot in a style that is unlike anything seen in Hollywood at the time or today. It’s only natural for art from another culture to reflect that culture’s aesthetic and values, but an open mind can find beauty and poetry in a variety of forms!
