Economically and morally, postwar Rome (Italy) was a difficult place to live. In addition to the chaos caused by physical destruction and sporadic post-war reconstruction, many migrants arrived from impoverished villages in search of a better life, creating competition for housing and employment. There was also a social divide between the classes over how Italy would develop in the future. Despite the fact that it had a strong Communist Party as well as a Democratic one, and the Catholic Church had a long history of influence, many poor people felt hopeless and fatalistic.
Small stories of ordinary people could easily be overlooked in this complex landscape, the individuals becoming faceless and lumped together as a statistic, as “the poor.” The goal of neorealist filmmakers was to keep the faces on the screen, and thus in our minds, and to bring awareness to a daily reality that was largely invisible to everyone except those who lived it. Many countries, including India, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba, influenced by Italian neorealism developed their own neorealist styles. It was a political and revolutionary approach to filmmaking in the true Marxist sense, because the camera was trained on realitythe hard life of the everyday person trying to make ends meet, which was largely ignored by Hollywood. There is no glitz or a forced happy ending.
However, don’t mistakenly believe that Italian neorealism is completely authentic, free of the manipulative “artificiality” found in Hollywood films. In a neorealist film, the director makes thousands of decisions in order to convey a specific atmosphere. For example, the director may shoot ten hours of footage but only keep two. He’s decided to cut out anything that doesn’t tell his story. The only camera that is truly realistic is a security camera mounted on a wall! What is “real” in these neorealist films, however, is the feeling, mood, and accurate portrayal of everyday life of a certain social class.
