The goal of this task is for you to recognize sociological themes at work in your daily life. You will critically evaluate how society shapes and constrains your daily existence by keeping a field journal of your social and institutional experiences for one day. This will enable you to interact with many of the sociological concepts that you learned in class. Field Analysis has a presentation that will help you complete the assignment more efficiently.
Instructions
1) The act of observing
Make a field journal (example). Observe and document the main interactions and institutions in your daily life for one day. Who is the first person you speak to when you wake up? What are your options for the next few days? Do you take your children to school, go to the gym, or go to work and engage with coworkers? Throughout the day, you will assume various roles by engaging with other people and in various settings, as well as interacting with various social institutions (education, government, health, etc.). Your field log should be typed or photographed and submitted with your written assignment.
2) Implementation
Before beginning this step, try to wait one or more days. Return to your field journal and analyze your observations using sociological analysis.
Describe how societal standards shape and constrain our day.
Examine how at least four sociological concepts (such as roles, institutions, interactions, impression management, stage theory, and emotional labor) apply to your field log observations. This section of the article should not be on the generic social norms you mentioned before; instead, focus on specific themes from our book (refrain from using dictionaries).Find and incorporate an appropriate source that demonstrates how sociologists investigate this idea in everyday society for at least two of the themes (for example, emotional labor in the restaurant industry). We talked about gender socialization, for example:
Crespi (2011) found that a cross-gender relationship between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, was significant in determining traditional and non-traditional gender attitudes in a study of gender socialization and gender roles within the family. According to the findings, having a positive relationship with the parent of the opposite gender can help to reduce conventional beliefs about gender roles (Crespi, 2011). *In your paper, use a different example; the goal is to demonstrate your research skills rather than repeat your research skills.
3) Introspection
Consider your motivations, instincts, sentiments, and/or structural constraints as a broader part of society. Discuss how other people influenced you and how you influenced others during your day’s social interactions.
A Field Log Example
A small field log is provided below to give you an idea of the kind of social interactions and institutions you can encounter during your day.
