Topic 4: Gender/Racial Differences in Treatment (Discrimination)
Groups 4~6 will present in class in addition to submitting the reports. Group 4 is designated Topic 3, Group 5 is designated Topic 4. Group 6 has the freedom to choose either one topic. Please use slides for the presentation.
All other groups can choose either one of the two topics and submit a report on the due date. Everyone should be prepared to discuss and share their applications and findings in class.
Please refer to the group project guideline for length and content requirements.

Below are suggestions of what you can think about. You are by no means constrained by the suggestions provided here. Be creative and surprise me!
Topic 3: Gender/Racial Differences in Characteristics
- Applications
- Other than the differences in education or major choices we talked about in class, what other characteristics are different between men and women that could lead to wage differences. There are a lot of recent literature that examines various non-cognitive skill differences between men and women, such as risk-taking, personality, competitiveness, etc. Pick out something interesting to talk about.
- Find statistics that shows that women receive less on-the-job training.
- Find more recent statistics on occupational segregation based on gender or race, or statistics of other countries.
- Find statistics on wage gaps between men and women by job types/major/occupation. For example, which job types have larger gender wage gaps than others? Are these due to differences in characteristics across gender?
- Extended Knowledge
- You can either start by coming up with a new question and then search for a paper that answers the question, or you can search in https://scholar.google.com/ the key words related to this topic, such as “wage gap between men and women” and find a relevant article you finding interesting and would like to share.
- Find an article that summarizes all the observed characteristic differences across gender or across racial groups.
Topic 4: Gender/Racial Differences in Treatment (Discrimination)
- Applications
- Personal experience of discrimination, and analyze if it was taste discrimination or statistical discrimination.
- Provide real-life examples of statistical discrimination, and explain why it is statistical discrimination.
- Provide real-life examples of how employer taste discrimination is eliminated by competition.
- Find news articles on discrimination cases, and analyze if they are taste discrimination or statistical discrimination.
- Extended Knowledge
- Find recent research that shows the results of Oaxaca Decomposition on gender wage gap, or racial wage gap.
- Find research that tries to distinguish between taste discrimination and statistical discrimination.
