For this assignment, you are responsible for designing a visual project in Power BI where you explain and examine an open source data set retrieved from either:
- NT Government Open Data Project: https://data.nt.gov.au/
- Darwin City Council: http://open-darwin.opendata.arcgis.com/
NOTE: Interstate students may use data from an open data portal. However I need to approve this BEFORE you begin your assessment
This assignment will enable you to synthesise all data analytics skills learned to date as well practice your data visualisation and storytelling skills.
A structure for your response is provided in the details on page 2.
Preparation
- Choose your data set/s. In some circumstances, depending of the data set chosen, you may want to use more than 1.
- Ask three (3) relevant questions relating to your data set. Consider:
- Who is your audience?
- What information does your visualization intend to convey to your audience?
- When developing questions, try to think of yourself as a data analyst, and consider all of the different kinds of analysis tasks that a person might want to perform.
- Extract the relevant data to answer each question. For example, you may use nominal and numeric data types to represent data and your data extraction may include mean, maximum, minimum, mode, or more sophisticated analyses.
- Visualise your data: Select appropriate representations and interactions of the data for your nominated audience.
- Check if your data representations can answer your questions.
- Convert your data values to graphical form. Select the most effective visual encoding to convert data values to graphical form, such as colour, area, charts, interactions.
- Briefly analyse your data visualisation and discuss the insight it provides. For example, how do your visual displays support answering the questions you asked above? What story are you telling with your data?
Presentation
Your written report should have at least three (3) questions and answers with the steps you have implemented to visualise the data, along with related screen shots showing the visualisation you used to answer each question. The maximum number of pages for this assignment is 4 (not counting visualisations)
The recommended structure for the report is as follows:
- Title page
- Problem: outline the problem you are trying to solve based on the data sets you identified. What are the three questions you are going to solve? You may use a scenario here if it helps. The audience should also be explained in this section.
- Data Wrangling: outline the steps you took to clean the data initially and the processes you used to understand what was in the data set you chose.
- Features extracted: based on your problem, what features did you choose to work with and why?
- Ethical considerations: use the factors from the Business Ethics Canvas to write about the ethical aspects you considered
- Modelling & Analysis: what visualisation and statistical processes did you employ to find answers to the problem you identified. Why did you choose these?
- Present Results: this should include a data dashboard created in POWER BI and contain both visual, numerical and textual data. Choices regarding visualisations should be explained critically.
- References (where appropriate)
Criteria
- Data Analysis Skills (Use of the Data Science Road Map, data extraction, creative questions and ethical considerations)
- Demonstration of Data Visualisation and Statistical Thinking skills (ability to use the language, concepts and processes, and representations of statistics to address the problem presented to the target audience)
- Demonstration of POWER BI skills (the ability to use a data dashboard to answer key questions)
- Writing skills – ability to write a coherent report. The report should provide some insight into the data, be easy to read and easy to understand. References should be included where appropriate
- Innovation/Originality – for going above and beyond!
