Delusions in Psychotic Disorders Such as Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders
Topic Statement (5 Points) Describe your proposed topic and briefly discuss what aspects of this topic you plan to investigate in your literature review. For example, if you’re interested in depression, you should specify what aspects of depression or what populations or what treatments, etc. you are going to study. You may include citations if you’d like but you’re not required to.
I want to look at effective treatments for delusions that are seen in psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. Specifically, those delusions that get in the way of daily functioning, such as “I cannot take a shower because gasoline comes out of the shower nozzle head” or “I cannot take medication because I am not sick, God has cured me.” As a result of these delusions are a barrier to functioning on a daily basis and do not allow individuals to function in what’s considered a normal manner such bathing at least once or twice a week and taking medication that is prescribed for high blood pressure or high cholesterol as prescribed daily. I would also like to know if psychotropic medications make a difference with the delusions, the false beliefs.
- Background (5 Points) How did you get this idea for your project? Why is this topic interesting and important to you, and others who might have an interest in this topic (e.g., therapists, clients, policy makers)?
I got the idea from working as a mental health worker in a locked psychiatric facility for the last year. The delusions that get in the way of the residents functioning in a safe and hygienic manner are the most difficult to mend. I believe anyone who works with the residents would have an interest in the topic such as doctors, therapists and family members.
- Literature Search Strategy (5 Points) Describe your proposed strategy for finding journal articles, books, and other sources for your literature review. Please be specific and discuss how you will use Pepperdine’s library resources and databases to select and document your references. For example, what keywords do you plan to use? What journals might be most relevant to your topic? In this section, you may also identify some challenges you anticipate so that we can better help you in the process.
My proposed search strategy is to firstly use psych info and psychiatry online to locate peer reviewed journal articles. I will use key words such as the following: effective treatments for delusions, effective treatment for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. For example, I will use the field TITLE and limit the search to include and exclude psychotropic medications. I am recording my search terms in a notebook specifically for this course. I will need to find one perfect key article and then use that key article to find additional articles. I will repeat my search and check for updates once per day. I plan on searching through such journals as: Journal of Abnormal Psychology Journal of Clinical Psychology and Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. I will only use Google Scholar to gather information about the topic; I mostly likely will not include articles I find as they may not be peer reviewed as we learned.
- Informational Resource Development (5 Points) The informational resource is an original resource you will develop to share information about your chosen topic with an intended audience. For example, you may choose to develop a fact sheet, pamphlet, infographic, informational video, webinar, etc. For this assignment, an informational resource is not an existing resource that you will use to inform your study of your chosen topic. What are some ideas for an informational resource you could develop related to this topic? At this stage, you don’t need to decide about this, but it is helpful to begin brainstorming early in the process so you can focus your literature search accordingly.
I will develop a fact sheet or pamphlet on the best way to manage delusions with residents, patients and loved ones who suffer from a psychotic disorder. I will include why the delusions happen and how best to respond to them and what not to do when hearing a delusion from an individual suffering with delusions.
