ASSIGNMENT 1
CURRICULUM PLAN ONE: NOURISHING CULTURE
You have read several lessons/files about how to create a nourishing classroom culture that operates from the belief that strong relationships are the foundation of the overall program curriculum. Base your work on chapter one/two: Create a Nourishing Classroom Culture.
You have also read about the importance of attachment and how educators have worked to enhance and support the emotional attachment between the child and the family.
There are some choices for this assignment-.Regardless of the assignment you choose, complete the following:
- Connect your assignment to the text. Use correct APA formatting for the integration of material into your work and in a reference list.
- Observe what is already happening in the program and find a way to extend/enhance some part of it to align with the elements of a nourishing culture.
Remember to read over picture taking protocols in the content section of D2L (Letters & Forms Section). If using identifiable pictures, submit the Permission Form (Permission, pictures, videos, observations) on the D2L Content Page.
Choose ONE of the following:
Choice A: If you are working in a centre and know that there will be a new family starting soon, you can develop and implement a plan to make the entry into your program as seamless as possible. This is not to be a re-cap of what the program currently does, but an enhanced approach to existing strategies. Identify what you changed/enhanced.
You studied this in these principles from week two:
2.3 PRINCIPLES: WELCOMING FAMILIES
Involve children in welcoming families
Honor each families uniqueness
Invest in learning each family’s culture and funds of knowledge
Keep children connected to their families
Gather families for explorations
Select any one, or a number, of the above principles that would be relevant to your particular centre and family that you will support. You may decide that some of the
strategies described in the chapter reading would also work in your situation. Feel free to implement what ideas makes sense to you.
- Identify the principles that you have selected.
- Develop a written, point-form plan. Be sure to discuss and collaborate with the staff, and wherever relevant and possible, the children, and families.
- Implement the plan.
- Document, interpret, and evaluate the plan. The document must include the written word and pictures. BE creative. You may choose a variety of methods of how to document and submit to your Instructor for evaluation; i.e., PowerPoint presentation, pictures combined with explanations, poster boards for the room, etc. Be sure to include the outcome for the staff, the child, and the family.
Choice B: This will be conducted within a program that you are familiar with (worksite, practicum centre, place of volunteering). Read over the principle of “Giving Children Ownership of Routines and Schedules.” Read over the “Your Turn” (2017, p.48) of the course textbook. You do not need to complete this portion, although you may choose to do this informally if you are unsure of where to build in more ownership for children. Your main task here is to build in more opportunities for children to have ownership over routines and schedules.
- Decide what specific tasks and chores, for this particular group of children and staff team, you want to build in more child ownership. You may choose one or several depending upon how big or small the tasks are and how much planning and work it will take to accomplish. You want to submit enough work to warrant a major assignment. Remember, this is not to be a re-cap of what the program currently does, but a changed approach.
- Be sure to discuss and collaborate with the staff, and wherever relevant and possible, the children and families.
- Develop a plan for change. This may involve observing and visually documenting current practice. It may involve gathering input from children, family members, and the staff. Your plan will be unique to the program that you are going to work with.
- Put the plan in action. You may use/adapt any ideas that you have read in the text as some of them may appear valid for this program.
- Document, interpret, and evaluate the plan. The document must include the written word and pictures. BE creative. You may choose a variety of methods of how to document and submit to your Instructor for evaluation; i.e., PowerPoint presentation, pictures combined with explanations, poster boards for the room, etc.
Choice C: Choose any one of the principles in the chapter reading. You may be particularly inspired by one of the principles and find that it is very relevant to a program that you are familiar with. Your task is to determine how to utilize the principle to enhance/support the elements of a nourishing culture of the program.
This is not to be a re-cap of what the program currently does, but a bonus for the program and its participants. You are free to use/adapt any of the ideas that would be relevant for this particular group of children and families.
- Write out the principle that you wish to do some work around.
- Identify why you have chosen this particular principle.
- Develop a plan for positive change. Be sure to discuss and collaborate with the staff, and wherever relevant and possible, the children and families.
If sending in a Word document, the written word must align with the pictures (do not send in a Word document absent of pictures, and then a separate file of pictures).
